- What Should You Check Before Buying Steel Windows?
- Steel windows come in mild steel, galvanised and stainless frames, and the material decides most of the cost.
- Galvanised, single-glazed units cost about ₹600–1,000 per sq ft before fitting and GST (June 2026).
- Quotes come per sq ft, per kg or per piece, so convert every quote to per sq ft before comparing.
- The coating matters more than thickness: bare or primer-only steel rusts.
- Steel wins on strength and security; uPVC and aluminium win on rust and insulation.
Steel windows are window frames made from rolled or pressed steel sections, glazed and fixed into a masonry opening. They cost more than basic aluminium or uPVC in India, but they are stronger, slimmer and harder to break into.
What Are Steel Windows and Where Do They Make Sense?
Steel windows suit openings that need security, strength and slim frames: ground floors, balconies, staircases and factories. Fire exits may need fire-rated units.
Salty coastal air attacks steel fast. Near the sea, choose stainless steel, or compare with aluminium windows, which do not rust.
Which Frame Materials Are Available: MS, GI or Stainless?
Steel windows come in four frame materials: mild steel, galvanised steel, colour-coated sheet and stainless steel. Material drives cost and durability most.
Steel window materials compared
Relative cost, lowest first| Material | What it is | Rust resistance | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mild steel (MS) Budget | Plain low-carbon steel | Low; needs primer and paint | Dry interiors, grills, tight budgets |
| Galvanised steel (GI, GPSP) Default pick | Steel sheet coated with zinc | Good, if the zinc layer is adequate | Most homes |
| CRCA and PPGI | Cold rolled sheet, or galvanised sheet with factory paint | CRCA low; PPGI good | Neat finish, colour frames |
| Stainless steel (SS 304) Premium | Chromium alloy, rust-resistant right through | Very good | Coastal and wet areas |
Gauge is sheet thickness; a lower number means thicker steel. GSM is grams of zinc per square metre of sheet.
Galvanised plain sheet is sold in zinc classes such as 90, 120 and 220 GSM. Ask the seller to write the GSM and thickness on the quote. Confirm SS 304 too, as cheaper SS 202 looks the same.
Which Opening Styles Are Available?
Steel windows come in six main opening styles. The style changes airflow, sealing and hardware cost.
Steel window opening styles
Hardware adds cost and upkeep| Style | How it opens | Ventilation | Typical use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fixed Cheapest | Does not open | None | Light only, stair walls |
| Casement | Swings on side hinges | High, best seal | Bedrooms, living rooms |
| Sliding | Glides on rollers and a track | Half the opening | Balconies, tight spaces |
| Louvered | Angled slats tilt together | Steady, weaker rain seal | Bathrooms, utility areas |
| Pivot | Turns on a central pivot | High | Large panes, factories |
| Awning | Hinged at the top, opens outward | Medium, sheds rain | Kitchens, high windows |

How Do Finishes and Coatings Change Lifespan and Price?
The finish decides how long a steel window lasts, especially through the monsoon.
- Red oxide or grey primer: a base coat only. A primer-coated window still needs a final paint.
- Wet paint (enamel): cheap and applied on site, but needs repainting more often.
- Powder coating: dry powder baked on in a factory, giving a harder, even finish.
A well-coated galvanised section outlasts a heavier mild steel section with a poor paint job. Ask for the coating thickness in microns from the maker's data sheet.
Which Window Type Suits Which Room?
Pick by room, based on moisture, airflow and security.
Room-by-room picker
Confirm standard sizes with the maker| Room | Suggested type | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Bedroom | GI casement with grill and mesh | Good seal, airflow, security |
| Kitchen | GI or SS awning or casement | Steam, smoke and grease |
| Bathroom | GI or SS louvered | Privacy and steady ventilation |
| Balcony, ground floor | Sliding with built-in grill | Saves space, adds security |

How Much Do Steel Windows Cost in India?
Galvanised steel windows cost about ₹600–1,000 per sq ft with single glazing, before installation and GST. That is the June 2026 supply rate in one national guide; local fabricators often quote less.
Indicative steel window prices per sq ft (2026)
Seller rates vary widely| Type | What the rate covers | ₹ per sq ft |
|---|---|---|
| Mild steel, painted Budget | Frame or grill; Bengaluru seller listings, Sept 2026 | ₹110–220 |
| Basic steel window, Kerala | Fabricator band, 2026 | ₹200–400 |
| Mid-range residential, Kerala | Fabricator band, 2026 | ₹400–550 |
| Galvanised, single glazed Typical pick | Frame plus glass, no fitting or GST; June 2026 | ₹600–1,000 |
| Galvanised, double glazed | Frame plus double-glazed unit; June 2026 | ₹900–1,400 |
| Galvanised, Low-E or premium | Premium glass; June 2026 | ₹1,500+ |
Sellers quote in three ways, and none are directly comparable:
- Per sq ft: usually includes glass and basic fittings.
- Per kg: weight of steel only; listings show about ₹72–82 per kg (2026).
- Per piece: a fixed size, such as a 4 × 4 ft window.
Fitting or repainting steel windows?
Primers, paints, sealants and hardware with a GST invoice.
What Pushes the Price Up or Down?
The price rises with material grade, thickness, coating, glass, hardware and size.
- Glass: clear float is cheapest; toughened, tinted, solar-control and double glazing add cost.
- Hardware: SS hinges, rollers, gas springs and PU foam gaskets (soft air and dust seals).
- Size and design: arched, curved and large-span units are priced separately.
- Extras: grills, mosquito mesh, transport and 18% GST.
Hardware and labour cost the same on a small window, so the per sq ft rate rises.
Should You Buy Branded or Use a Local Fabricator?
Branded steel windows, such as Tata Pravesh, give consistent quality and a written warranty. Local fabricators are cheaper and build any size.
Branded system
ConsistentTata Pravesh and similar.
- Factory galvanising and powder coat
- Written warranty from the brand
- Standard sizes, longer lead time
- Higher price per sq ft
Local fabricator
FlexibleWorkshop-made to your opening.
- Quality depends on the workshop
- Warranty often verbal or none
- Any size, quick turnaround
- Lower price per sq ft
To check a "Tata" or "GI" claim, ask for:
- The sheet's brand marking, thickness and zinc GSM
- A tax invoice naming the brand
- The authorised dealer listing on the brand's own site
- An ISI mark under IS 1038:1983, the BIS standard for steel doors, windows and ventilators, where claimed

How Do You Calculate the Cost and Read a Quote?
Multiply the window area by the rate per sq ft, then add fitting and GST.
A proper quote itemises each of these:
- Material and grade, thickness and coating
- Glass type and thickness
- Hardware, grill and mesh
- Installation, transport and GST
How Is Installation Done, and What Does It Cost?
A fabricator's team fixes, grouts and seals the frame. One June 2026 guide puts window installation at about ₹30–65 per sq ft.
- Measure the finished opening after plastering.
- Fix the frame with lugs or anchors, checked for plumb with a spirit level.
- Grout the gap with cement mortar, then cure.
- Seal the joint with sealant, then fit glass and hardware.
Get the delivery date in writing, and leave anything beyond a simple fixed unit to professionals.
How Do You Maintain the Frames and Prevent Rust?
Steel windows need cleaning, lubrication and quick touch-ups to stay rust-free.
- Wipe frames and clear track dust every month
- Oil hinges and rollers before and after the monsoon
- Touch up scratches with primer and paint at once
Ask for the warranty in writing and check what it excludes. Rust from scratches, poor fitting and coastal exposure are common exclusions.
How Do Steel Windows Compare With Aluminium, uPVC and Wood?
Steel windows win on strength and security; aluminium and uPVC win on rust resistance and upkeep.
Window frame materials compared
Single glazing, supply only, June 2026| Material | ₹ per sq ft | Strength | Upkeep | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Steel (galvanised) | ₹600–1,000 | Highest | Rust checks, repaint | Security, slim frames, fire-rated |
| Aluminium | ₹350–600 | Good | Low | Coastal, large sliders |
| uPVC | ₹250–450 | Moderate | Low | Insulation, noise |
| Wood | ₹500–900 | Good | High; termites, polish | Traditional look |
A plain steel frame is not fire-rated by default. Fire-rated units are tested as a full assembly, so ask for the test certificate.
