- In Vastu tradition, a north-facing house is considered favourable because north is linked with Kubera, the god of wealth.
- The facing alone is not the verdict. Vastu judges the exact slot (pada) of the main door on the north wall.
- Most practitioners favour padas 3, 4 and 5 (Mukhya, Bhallat, Soma), counted from the north-west corner, and avoid pada 6 (Bhujag).
- The usual zoning: pooja and water in the north-east, kitchen in the south-east, master bedroom in the south-west, guests in the north-west.
- Vastu is a traditional belief system, not a building code. Structural changes need an engineer, not just a remedy.
North facing house vastu is the set of traditional Vastu Shastra guidelines for a home whose main entrance opens toward the north. Vastu treats north as a favourable direction, but it rates a north-facing home on where the door sits and how the rooms are zoned, not on the facing alone.
This guide stays on north-facing plots and flats. For the general rules that apply to every home, see our guide to Vastu for home.
Is a North Facing House Good as per Vastu Shastra?
Yes, a north-facing house is considered good in Vastu Shastra, which is a traditional Indian system of design rules drawn from Sanskrit texts. North is the direction of Kubera, the god of wealth, so Vastu links it with prosperity and opportunity.
However, Vastu does not call every north-facing home lucky. Two homes on the same road can get different verdicts. The difference comes from:
- the pada (slot) on the north wall that holds the main door
- what sits in the north-east corner, such as a toilet or staircase
- whether the north and east sides are kept lighter and more open than the south and west
A north-facing home is only as good as its layout. A well-placed door and an open north-east matter more, in Vastu terms, than the facing itself.
Keep the two kinds of claim apart. The link with wealth is a belief. Steady daylight and cross ventilation are practical points you can check on site.
Treat a north-facing label as a starting point. The main door slot and the north-east corner decide how a Vastu practitioner will read the home.

How Do You Confirm Your House Really Faces North?
Your house faces north if you face north when you stand at the main door and look out. The road side, the gate or the building's name does not decide the facing.
- Stand just outside the main door with your back to the house.
- Hold a magnetic compass or a calibrated phone compass flat at waist height.
- Step about a metre away from steel gates, grills, cars and electrical panels, then take the reading.
- Repeat at two or three points along the front wall and take the average.
- Note whether the reading is true north, north-north-east or north-north-west. Practitioners treat these differently.
A corner plot can have roads on the north and east. A flat can open into a corridor facing west while its balcony faces north. Vastu reads the main entrance, so check the door, not the road.
In apartments, take the reading at the flat's own main door. The building's lobby facing does not count for your unit.
Small errors matter. Housing.com notes that a difference of three or four degrees can change how a home maps onto the 16 Vastu zones.
What Are the Benefits of a North Facing House?
The benefits of a north-facing house fall into two groups: traditional Vastu beliefs and practical light and comfort points.
Traditional Vastu belief
BeliefWhat Vastu texts and practitioners commonly claim.
- Prosperity, from the link with Kubera
- Career and business growth
- Calm and positive energy at home
- Support for study and spiritual practice
Practical, checkable points
VerifiableWhat you can test on a site visit.
- Softer, more even daylight on the front rooms
- Less harsh afternoon sun on the main facade
- Good cross ventilation if north and east stay open
- Front setback works well as a shaded sit-out
Bengaluru adds a twist. The city lies at about 13° N, so the sun passes directly overhead twice a year, on Zero Shadow Days in late April and mid-August (25 April and 18 August in 2023). Between those dates the noon sun sits slightly to the north.
As a result, a north facade in Bengaluru gets some direct sun for about four months. Plan sunshades for north windows too. Our guide to window designs for home covers sizes and shading.
A north-facing home cannot fix a poor plan, a damp site or bad construction on its own.
Who Is a North Facing House Suitable For?
A north-facing house is traditionally considered suitable for people in business, finance, trade and knowledge work, because north is linked with wealth and new opportunities.
Advice by rashi (zodiac sign) varies widely. Classical Vastu is mainly about the building, while rashi and nakshatra matching comes from astrology. Different practitioners give different answers, so treat any rashi chart online as one opinion. Ask a qualified Vastu consultant if this matters to your family.
People often ask which way Antilia, the Ambani home in Mumbai, faces. We could not confirm its facing from reliable sources. Reports only say that Vastu pujas were done before the family moved in. Celebrity homes are weak evidence either way.
Where Should the Main Door Be in a North Facing House?

The main door of a north-facing house should sit in pada 3, 4 or 5 of the north wall, counted from the north-west corner. These slots are called Mukhya, Bhallat and Soma.
A pada is one of the equal divisions of a wall in the Vastu Purusha Mandala, the grid Vastu uses to map a plot. The common 32-pada system gives each wall 8 padas.
North wall padas for the main door
Counted from the north-west corner to the north-east corner| Pada | Traditional name | Common Vastu view |
|---|---|---|
| N1 | Roga | Usually avoided |
| N2 | Naga | Usually avoided |
| N3 Favoured | Mukhya | Favourable |
| N4 Favoured | Bhallat | Favourable |
| N5 Favoured | Soma | Favourable, linked with wealth |
| N6 Avoid | Bhujag | Widely advised against |
| N7 | Aditi | Opinions differ |
| N8 Acceptable | Diti | Often listed as acceptable |
You can mark the padas on site with a measuring tape.
Practitioners differ on whether to measure the plot boundary or the house wall. Ask yours before marking the door frame.
Keep the door inside the middle of the north wall and away from both corners. Never let the door frame cross into pada 6.
Door details that Vastu guides commonly add:
- The main door is the largest door in the house.
- Door shutters open inward, into the home.
- The entrance is well lit, with no pillar, pole or tree directly in front.
- A raised threshold and a clean, uncluttered entry.
- A clear name plate beside the door.
What Is the Basic Vastu Plan for a North Facing House?
The basic north facing house plan as per Vastu keeps the north-east light and open, puts fire in the south-east, and places heavy rooms in the south-west. You can reuse this grid for every room decision below.
Vastu zoning for a north-facing plan
Widely used assignments; schools differ on details| Zone | Element | Usual use | Keep out |
|---|---|---|---|
| North-east (Ishanya) | Water | Pooja, open space, sump | Toilet, kitchen, stairs, heavy load |
| North | Water | Entrance, living room, open setback | Septic tank, heavy walls |
| East | Air | Living, study, windows | Septic tank |
| South-east (Agneya) | Fire | Kitchen, electrical panel | Water tank, bedroom |
| South | Fire or earth (schools differ) | Bedrooms, stairs | Large openings |
| South-west (Nairutya) | Earth | Master bedroom, storage, overhead tank | Entrance, pit, toilet |
| West | Space | Children's room, dining, stairs | Main entrance pit |
| North-west (Vayavya) | Air | Guest room, alternative kitchen, garage | Master bedroom |
| Centre (Brahmasthan) | Space | Open, light hall or courtyard | Toilet, stairs, pillar |
When in doubt, put weight, height and storage toward the south-west and keep the north-east open, low and clean.
Which Room Goes Where in a North Facing House as per Vastu?
In a north-facing house, Vastu places the living room near the north entrance, the kitchen in the south-east, the master bedroom in the south-west and the pooja room in the north-east.
Room-by-room Vastu for a north facing house
Ideal zone, workable alternative, what to avoid| Room | Ideal zone | Alternative | Avoid |
|---|---|---|---|
| Living room | North or north-east | East | South-west |
| Kitchen | South-east | North-west | North-east, north |
| Master bedroom | South-west | South or west | North-east, south-east |
| Children's bedroom | West | North-west, east | South-east |
| Pooja room | North-east | East or north | Under stairs, next to a toilet |
| Toilet and bath | North-west or west | South (not the corner) | North-east, centre |
| Staircase | South, west or south-west | South-east, north-west | North-east, north, centre |
| Study or home office | North or east | West | Under a beam |
Living room
The living room fits naturally behind a north entrance. Place heavy sofas against the south or west walls, and keep the north-east corner free or lightly furnished.
Kitchen
The kitchen belongs in the south-east, the zone of fire. North-west is the usual second choice. Vastu guides advise against a kitchen in the north or north-east, and against a stove that faces the main door. If you are planning a new kitchen, our modular kitchen design guide covers layouts that fit a south-east corner.
If your kitchen already sits elsewhere, practitioners usually suggest moving the hob to the south-east part of that room rather than rebuilding.
Master and children's bedrooms
The master bedroom goes in the south-west, which Vastu links with stability. Children's rooms suit the west or north-west. For bed position and head direction, see sleeping direction as per Vastu.
Pooja room
The pooja room is placed in the north-east, with the person praying facing east or north. Keep the idols off the floor and away from a shared wall with a toilet. In a north-facing plan, the north-east pooja room often sits right next to the entrance, so screen it from the door.
Toilets, bathrooms and septic tank
Toilets go in the north-west or west, never in the north-east or the centre. Housing.com and NoBroker both advise keeping a septic tank out of the north, north-east and east.
Staircase
Staircase vastu for a north facing house places the stairs in the south, west or south-west, rising clockwise. Stairs in the north-east are treated as a defect, even though tight plots often put them there for space.
Study or home office
A study suits the north or east, with the desk placed so you face north or east while working.
Lock the kitchen, toilets and staircase positions on the drawing before plumbing and electrical work begins. Moving a toilet or a stair after the slab is cast costs far more than any Vastu consultation.

Where Do Balconies, Water Tanks and Open Spaces Go?
Balconies, gardens and larger open setbacks go on the north and east sides of a north-facing house. Heavier structures and tall trees go toward the south and west.
- Balcony and garden: north or east, kept open and uncluttered.
- Sump, borewell and fountain: north-east or north.
- Overhead tank: south-west or west, on the roof, not above the north-east.
- Septic tank: not in the north, north-east or east.
- Compound wall: lower and lighter on the north and east, taller on the south and west.
- Tall trees: south or west, not blocking the north entrance.
Setbacks, sump position and drain connections must follow your approved building plan and local bye-laws. In Bengaluru, check them with your architect before you apply any Vastu change.
What Colours and Furniture Suit a North Facing House?
The north-facing house vastu colours most often suggested are green, light blue, white and soft neutrals. Guides commonly advise against red and very dark shades on north walls.
Colour and furniture guide by zone
Traditional preferences, not rules| Zone | Suggested colours | Furniture |
|---|---|---|
| North and north-east | Light green, light blue, white | Light, low, minimal |
| South-east | Warm, light tones | Kitchen units, appliances |
| South-west | Earthy beige, light brown | Beds, wardrobes, heavy storage |
| North-west | White, cream, light grey | Guest bed, medium pieces |
Vastu guides also advise against a mirror facing the bed. A mirror on a north or east wall is the usual suggestion.
How Do Vastu Rules Work on 30x40, Duplex and Flat Plans?
The same zoning applies to every plot size. Only the room sizes and the number of floors change.
- 30x40 north facing plan: a 30x40 plot is 1,200 sq ft. With a 30 ft north frontage, the door goes 7.5–18.75 ft from the north-west corner, the living room behind it, the kitchen in the south-east and the master bedroom in the south-west. Plot size says nothing about facing, so check the road side first.
- Duplex: put the internal stair in the south or west, rising clockwise. Place upper-floor bedrooms over the south-west, and keep the floor above the north-east lighter or open as a terrace.
- North-east and north-west facing plots: these are diagonal facings. Practitioners read them as separate cases, so do not apply north-facing pada rules directly.
Independent house or plot
Full controlYou decide the door, rooms and tanks.
- Fix the door pada on the drawing
- Zone every room from the grid
- Place stairs, sump and tanks correctly
- Plan open space to the north and east
Apartment
Interior onlyThe floor plate is fixed by the builder.
- Check the flat's own door, not the lobby
- Check where the kitchen and toilets sit
- Use furniture and colour for the rest
- Rely more on remedies than rebuilding
Online 30x40 plan PDFs rarely match your setbacks, soil or bye-laws. Use them for ideas, then have an architect draw your plan.
What Are Common Vastu Defects in North Facing Houses, and Their Remedies?
The most common Vastu defects in north-facing houses are a toilet, kitchen or staircase in the north-east, and a main door in an avoided pada. Most can be handled with non-structural remedies.
Defects and traditional remedies
Remedies vary between practitioners| Defect | Traditional remedy | Fixability |
|---|---|---|
| Clutter or heavy items in the north-east | Clear and relocate to the south-west | Easy Easy |
| Dark or blocked entrance | Add lighting, remove obstructions, clean threshold | Easy Easy |
| Door in an avoided pada | Shift the frame within the wall, or use a Vastu strip or yantra | Moderate Moderate |
| Kitchen in the north-east | Move the hob to the room's south-east part; light colours | Moderate Moderate |
| Toilet in the north-east | Keep closed and clean; practitioners may suggest relocation | Hard Hard |
| Staircase in the north-east | Keep light; avoid storage under it | Hard Hard |
Signs of a defect that is hard to correct:
- A toilet or septic tank in the north-east corner
- A cut (missing) north-east corner in the plot or house shape
- Stairs or an overhead tank sitting over the north-east
- A main door that can only fall in pada 6 because of the plan
Shifting a door, opening a wall or moving stairs can affect beams and load paths. Get a structural engineer to check before any change, and a Vastu consultant to confirm it is needed.
Is a North Facing House Better Than East, West or South Facing?
No facing is best for everyone in Vastu. North is linked with wealth and east with health and knowledge, while west and south homes can work with the right entrance pada.
North vs east, west and south facing houses
Traditional associations and the main thing to check| Facing | Traditional association | Main thing to check |
|---|---|---|
| North Favoured | Kubera, wealth, opportunity | Door in padas 3–5; open north-east |
| East Favoured | Sunrise, health, knowledge | Door pada; morning light kept open |
| West | Stability, gains for some trades | Door pada; afternoon heat |
| South Often doubted | Yama; widely feared but not ruled out | Door pada matters most |
Vastu links north with Kubera, so north is the usual answer. Still, a well-planned east or west home beats a poorly planned north one in most practitioners' view.
What Should You Check Before Buying a North Facing House or Flat?
Before buying a north-facing property, confirm the facing at the main door, the door pada, and what sits in the north-east.
- Compass reading taken at the main door, away from metal
- Main door in pada 3, 4 or 5, not in pada 6
- No toilet, kitchen or staircase in the north-east
- Kitchen in the south-east or north-west
- Master bedroom in the south-west
- Centre of the home open, without a toilet or stair
- North and east open, with no tall building or tree right in front
- Sump in the north-east or north; overhead tank in the south-west or west
- Septic tank, if any, not in the north, north-east or east
- Balcony on the north or east side
North-facing homes are often in demand with Indian buyers. We found no reliable data on the price difference in Bengaluru, so ask local brokers about recent sales before paying a premium.
Plot or flat check
Compass reading, road side, slope and north-east condition.
Plan review
Architect and Vastu consultant agree the door pada and room zoning.
Bhoomi pujan and foundation
Mark the door, sump and stair positions before excavation.
Plumbing and electrical
Fix toilet, kitchen and panel positions before slabs and plaster.
Finishes and griha pravesh
Colours, furniture and the entrance are set before you move in.
How Do You Apply North Facing House Vastu Without Overspending?
Apply north facing house vastu in order of impact: confirm the facing, get the main door right, zone the rooms, and use remedies only for what is left.
- Confirm the facing with a compass at the main door.
- Fix the door in pada 3, 4 or 5 on the drawing.
- Zone the kitchen, master bedroom, toilets and stairs.
- Use colour, furniture and lighting for the finer points.
Consult a qualified Vastu consultant for a plan review, and an architect or structural engineer for any change to walls, doors or stairs.
