Summary — what you need to know
  • The best bed direction as per Vastu puts your head to the south, with east as the next choice.
  • Set the headboard against a solid wall, ideally in the south-west part of the room.
  • Keep the bed out of the door line, out from under beams, and away from a shared toilet wall.
  • Leave about 60 cm (2 ft) to walk on each side you use to get in and out.
  • If the room won't allow the ideal, rotate or shift the bed before you buy anything new.

The usual bed direction as per Vastu is a bed placed so your head points south while you sleep, with the headboard on a solid south wall. If south is not possible, Vastu's next choice is head to the east.

This guide is about the bed itself: which wall, which corner and what to keep around it. For the full reasoning behind each head direction, read our guide to the sleeping direction as per Vastu.

Which Way Should Your Bed Face as per Vastu?

Your bed should be set so your head points south, with your feet towards the north. Vastu Shastra, the traditional Indian system of building design, ranks the four head directions like this:

  1. South: the default pick, linked in tradition with deep, settled sleep.
  2. East: a close second, linked with sunrise, focus and energy.
  3. West: acceptable when the first two are impossible.
  4. North: avoided in almost every Vastu source.
Head direction and bed placement are two different rules

"Head to the south" is about where your head points. "Bed in the south-west" is about where the bed sits in the room. You can follow both at once, and you should say which one you mean when you ask for advice.

People also say a bed "faces" a direction. That usually means the direction your feet point. A bed with the head to the south therefore "faces" north.

Which Headboard Wall Suits Which Sleeper?

The headboard wall decides your head direction, so pick the wall first. This table shows each option as Vastu tradition describes it. These are beliefs, not medical claims.

Headboard wall, head direction and who it suits

Traditional Vastu guidance
Headboard onHead pointsTraditional effectOften suggested for
South wall Default pickSouthStability, deep restMost adults, couples, the elderly
East wall GoodEastFocus, fresh energyStudents, working professionals
West wall AcceptableWestNeutralFallback when south and east are blocked
North wall AvoidNorthLinked with restless sleep in traditionLast resort only
The usual Vastu reason for avoiding north is the Earth's magnetic field. Sleep researchers have not confirmed that sleep direction affects health.

The Sleep Foundation, a US sleep-health publisher, says there is still no definitive answer on sleep direction. The few studies are small and mixed. Treat the ranking as tradition, and put comfort and a regular sleep routine first.

Where Should the Bed Go in the Bedroom as per Vastu?

The bed should sit in the south-west part of the bedroom, with its headboard against a solid wall. Vastu links the south-west with weight and stability, so the heaviest piece of furniture goes there.

  • Solid wall behind the head. Avoid a window, a glass partition or a "floating" bed with nothing behind it.
  • Solid headboard. Most sources prefer a firm, non-metal headboard to an open grille.
  • Out of the door line. You should see the door from bed, but your feet should not point straight at it.
  • No beam overhead. Vastu advises against sleeping directly under an exposed beam or a sloped ceiling.
  • Not on the toilet wall. The headboard should not share a wall with an attached bathroom, especially one with plumbing behind it.
  • Space on both sides. Leave room to walk on at least two sides, and keep the bed off the centre of a large room.

A Vastu beam is not a structural problem

The advice about beams is a Vastu belief about comfort. A beam over your bed is not a safety risk. Never chip, cut or drill into a beam to "fix" Vastu.

How Do the Rules Work in a Real 12 × 12 ft Bedroom?

The rules work best when you apply them in order: head direction, then wall, then door, then walkways. Here is one room worked through.

Worked example12 × 12 ft master bedroom, door on the east wall near the north-east corner
Room size12 × 12 ft (about 3.66 × 3.66 m)
Bed: typical queen mattress78 × 60 in (6.5 × 5 ft)
Headboard wall (head points south)South wall
Gap to the west wall, for the walkway2 ft
Gap to the east wall: 12 − 2 − 55 ft
Space at the foot of the bed: 12 − 6.55.5 ft
Door line (north part of the east wall)Clear of the bed
ResultHead south, bed in the south-west quarter

The 5.5 ft at the foot leaves room for a wardrobe on the west wall beyond the bed. Keep its mirror, if it has one, from reflecting the bed.

Which Bed Position Suits Couples, Children and Guests?

Vastu matches the bedroom zone and head direction to the person using the room. Treat these as common suggestions, not fixed rules.

Bedroom zone and head direction by occupant

Common Vastu suggestions
OccupantBedroom zoneHead direction
Master bedroom, couplesSouth-westSouth
Children and studentsEast or north-westEast
GuestsNorth-westSouth or east
Elderly membersSouth-west or westSouth
Any bedroom AvoidNorth-east, south-east, centre of houseNorth
Sources differ. Some suggest head to the north for children, which conflicts with the usual rule; most keep north off the list.

For couples, most sources keep the bed in the south-west and the head to the south. If you are planning a new house, fix these zones at the floor-plan stage; our guide to house map design and floor plan layouts shows how rooms are usually arranged.

What If Your Bed Can't Follow Vastu Direction?

If your room can't match the ideal, work down a fallback order and change only what is easy. Most Vastu practitioners treat these rules as preferences to balance, not all-or-nothing tests.

  1. Rotate the bed first. Try the south wall, then the east wall, then the west wall.
  2. Shift along the wall. Moving the bed 1–2 ft often clears a beam or the door line.
  3. Handle a beam you can't avoid. Move the bed out from under it, or hide it with a light false ceiling.
  4. Cover what you can't move. Close the bathroom door at night and cover a mirror that faces the bed.
  5. Accept north as a last resort. Sleep there comfortably rather than forcing an awkward layout.

Head to the south

Default pick

Choose this when the south wall is solid and free.

  • Vastu's first choice for rest
  • Suits couples and the master bedroom
  • Pairs naturally with a south-west bed

Head to the east

Best fallback

Choose this when the south wall has a window or door.

  • Vastu's choice for focus and study
  • Suits students and children's rooms
  • Often easier in east-facing flats
In a rented flat, move furniture, never walls

Rotating or shifting the bed is free and reversible. Remedies that change the structure, such as cutting new openings, are not worth it for a rented home.

Hostels and hotels are short stays. Most sources say to follow the head-direction rule if the bed can be moved, and otherwise not to worry.

How Do You Move Your Bed to the Right Direction in One Weekend?

You can reorient a furnished bedroom in four stages over a weekend.

Sat am

Read the compass and measure

Mark south and east, then measure the bed, walls, door swing and beam.

Sat pm

Clear the target wall

Move side tables, plug points in use and anything stored under the bed.

Sun am

Shift the bed and wardrobe

Place the headboard first, then check walkways and the door line.

Night

Sleep on it

Note light, noise and draughts. Adjust by a few inches if needed.

How Do You Find the Right Bed Direction at Home?

Use a phone compass app or a simple magnetic compass, and take readings in two spots.

  1. Hold the phone flat at waist height in the middle of the room.
  2. Move away from metal and electronics. Steel almirahs, speakers and wiring can pull the needle.
  3. Take a second reading near the headboard wall and compare.
  4. Mark south on the wall with masking tape before you move anything.
Your walls may not face due south

Many plots and apartment blocks are tilted. Use the compass reading, not the builder's "south-facing" label. A compass shows magnetic north, which differs slightly from true north; this gap is called magnetic declination. Your floor level in a tall building does not change the direction.

What Should You Keep Around and Under the Bed?

Keep the area around and under the bed clear, calm and simple. Vastu sources agree on what to avoid more than on what to add.

  • A mirror that reflects the bed, including a mirrored wardrobe door
  • Metal tools, electronics or junk stored under the bed
  • A metal bed with an open grille headboard
  • A TV or laptop charging beside your head all night
  • Bright, glossy wall colours behind the headboard

Soft linen and blankets are fine under a storage bed. A sturdy wooden bed with a solid headboard is the usual Vastu choice. For calm, light colours and finishes, see our ideas for bedroom floor tiles and patterns.

Feng Shui, the Chinese placement tradition, gives different head-direction advice. Pick one system and follow it consistently.

What Is a Quick Vastu Check for Your Bed?

You can check your bed against Vastu in about ten minutes with a phone compass.

  • Head points south or east
  • Headboard on a solid wall, not a window or toilet wall
  • Bed in the south-west part of the room where possible
  • Feet not pointing straight at the door
  • No beam directly overhead
  • No mirror reflecting the bed, nothing heavy stored underneath

Change what is easy and accept what is fixed. A comfortable mattress and a steady sleep routine matter more than a perfect compass reading.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which direction is best for bed as per vastu?

The best bed direction as per Vastu has the headboard on the south wall, so your head points south. East is the next best choice. Place the bed in the south-west part of the room where you can.

Which direction should my head point while sleeping according to Vastu?

Your head should point south, or east if south is not possible. West is acceptable as a fallback. Vastu advises against pointing your head north.

Why is sleeping with the head towards the south considered best in Vastu?

Vastu links the south with stability and deep rest. Many Vastu writers also explain it through the Earth's magnetic field. Sleep research has not confirmed this effect, so treat it as tradition.

Why should you avoid sleeping with your head towards the north or west?

Vastu tradition links head to the north with restless sleep, so it is avoided. West is not forbidden; it is simply ranked below south and east. If west is your only option, most sources say it is fine.

Which bed direction is best for students and professionals who need focus?

Vastu suggests head to the east for students and working professionals, as tradition links the east with focus and energy. Put the headboard on the east wall and keep a study table out of the bed area.

What is the ideal location for the bed in a bedroom as per Vastu?

The ideal location is the south-west part of the bedroom, with the headboard against a solid wall. Leave walking space on at least two sides, and keep the bed clear of beams and the toilet wall.

Should the bed directly face the bedroom door according to Vastu?

No. Vastu advises that your feet should not point straight at the door. You should still be able to see the door from bed, so shift the bed sideways out of the door line.

What objects and mirror placements should be avoided around or under the bed in Vastu?

Avoid any mirror that reflects the bed, and cover a mirrored wardrobe at night. Do not store metal, tools, electronics or clutter under the bed. Soft items such as linen and blankets are fine.
