- Vastu tradition does not call a south-facing house bad by itself. The main door slot and room zoning decide the verdict.
- The south wall has 8 padas in the 32-pada system. Most practitioners favour pada 3 (Vitatha) and pada 4 (Grihakshat), counted from the south-east corner.
- Keep the main door out of padas 5 to 8, the half of the wall toward the south-west.
- Usual zoning: kitchen south-east, master bedroom south-west, pooja north-east, with the north and east kept open.
- Vastu is a traditional belief system, not a building code. Any wall or door change needs an engineer.
South facing house vastu is the set of traditional Vastu Shastra guidelines for a home whose main entrance opens toward the south. Vastu does not treat the south as a forbidden direction. It judges a south-facing home by where the door sits on the south wall and how the rooms are zoned.
This guide uses the same pada scheme as our north facing house Vastu guide. For rules that apply to every home, see Vastu for home.
Is a South Facing House Good or Bad as per Vastu?
A south-facing house is not bad as per Vastu. Vastu Shastra, the traditional Indian system of design rules, rates it as workable when the main door sits in a favoured pada and the south-west is kept heavy and closed.
The bad reputation comes from one association. In Vastu tradition, the south (Dakshina) belongs to Yama, the god of death and justice. Popular talk turned that link into "south-facing means bad luck".
A plot on a south road can have its door on the east. A flat in a south-facing tower can open into a west corridor. Vastu reads the main door.
Which South-Facing House Myths Are Perception, Not Vastu?
Most fears about south-facing homes are market perception rather than what Vastu texts say. These are the common ones:
- "South-facing means financial loss." Practitioners tie outcomes to the door pada and the south-west corner, not the facing alone.
- "Only some professions should live there." This advice comes from astrology and rashi (moon sign) charts, a separate system.
- "South, south-east and south-west are the same." They are not. The south-east is the fire corner, the south-west the zone of stability. Their rules differ sharply.
How Do You Check Your Home's Actual Facing Direction?
Your home faces south if a compass reads south when you stand at the main door looking out.
- Stand just outside the main door with your back to the house.
- Hold a magnetic compass or calibrated phone compass flat at waist height.
- Step about a metre away from steel gates, grills, cars and electrical panels.
- Take readings at two or three points along the front wall and average them.
- Check the result against the north arrow on your approved site plan.
A plot with roads on the south and east has two possible fronts. The side that holds the main door sets the facing, not the long side or the road.
Where Should the Main Door Be in a South Facing House?

The main door of a south-facing house should sit in pada 3 (Vitatha) or pada 4 (Grihakshat) of the south wall, counted from the south-east corner. Padas 5 to 8, toward the south-west, are widely avoided.
A pada is one equal division of a wall in the Vastu Purusha Mandala, the grid Vastu lays over a plot. The 32-pada system gives each wall 8 padas.
South wall padas for the main door
Counted from the south-east corner to the south-west corner| Pada | Traditional name | Common Vastu view |
|---|---|---|
| S1 | Anil (Vayu) | Opinions differ |
| S2 | Pusha | Opinions differ |
| S3 Favoured | Vitatha | Favoured by most modern practitioners |
| S4 Favoured | Grihakshat (Brihatkshata) | Most widely favoured |
| S5 Avoid | Yama | Widely advised against |
| S6 Avoid | Gandharva | Widely advised against |
| S7 Avoid | Bhringraj | Widely advised against |
| S8 Avoid | Mriga | Avoided; nearest the south-west |
The Brihat Samhita, a 6th-century Sanskrit text by Varahamihira, gives a favourable result only for the Brihatkshata (pada 4) door on the south side, and lists Vitatha (pada 3) as unfavourable. Modern practitioners usually accept both.
If the drawing puts the door past the middle of the south wall, shift it toward the south-east before the foundation is marked. After construction, the same move means cutting a wall.
Door details that Vastu guides commonly add:
- The main door is the largest door in the house and opens inward.
- A raised threshold and a well-lit, uncluttered entry.
- A clear name plate beside the door.
What Is the Basic South Facing House Vastu Plan?
The basic south facing house Vastu plan keeps the south and south-west heavy and closed, and the north and east light and open. Every room decision below follows from this grid.
Room-to-direction summary for a south-facing house
Ideal zone and what to avoid; schools differ on details| Room | Ideal zone | Avoid |
|---|---|---|
| Living room | North, north-east or east | South-west |
| Kitchen | South-east (north-west second) | North-east, south-west |
| Master bedroom | South-west | North-east, south-east |
| Children's or guest room | North-west or west | South-east |
| Pooja room | North-east | South, under stairs, beside a toilet |
| Staircase | South or west | North-east, centre |
| Toilet and bath | North-west or west | North-east, centre, south-west corner |
A 30x40 south-facing plan follows the same logic, but a rotated north-facing plan will not fit, because the entrance and zones shift. Have an architect draw yours to local bye-laws.
Which Room Goes Where in a South Facing House as per Vastu?
In a south-facing house, Vastu puts the kitchen in the south-east, the master bedroom in the south-west, the pooja room in the north-east and the living room on the north or east side.
Kitchen
The kitchen belongs in the south-east, the fire corner, with the cook facing east. North-west is the usual second choice. Our modular kitchen design guide covers corner layouts.
Master bedroom
The master bedroom goes in the south-west, which Vastu links with stability. In a multi-floor home, guides place it on the top floor. For bed and head position, see sleeping direction as per Vastu.
Pooja room
The pooja room sits in the north-east, at the back of a south-facing house.
Staircase
The staircase goes in the south or west, which adds weight where Vastu wants it. Keep stairs out of the north-east and the centre.
Bathrooms and toilets
Toilets go in the north-west or west. Avoid the north-east, the centre and the south-west corner.
Living room
The living room fits the north, north-east or east side. Put heavy sofas against the south or west walls. Children's and guest rooms suit the north-west or west.
Fix the kitchen, toilets and staircase on the drawing before plumbing and electrical lines go in. Moving a toilet after the slab is cast costs far more than a plan review.
Which Colours Suit a South-Facing Home and Main Gate?
Vastu guides commonly suggest warm colours for the south: red, coral, orange, pink and earthy browns. The reasoning in tradition is that the south links with fire energy.
- Main gate: coral red, pink or orange shades, per Housing.com.
- Colours to avoid on the gate: black and blue.
- Walls: warm colours as accents, with light wall paint.
- Entrance: bright lighting and an uncluttered threshold.
- Mirrors: on the north or east wall, not facing the main door.
Climate matters too. Bengaluru sits at about 13° N, so the noon sun is south of overhead from mid-August to late April. A south facade gets direct sun for about 8 months, so plan sunshades and pale exterior paint.
What Should You Not Place in the South Direction?
Vastu tradition advises against open water, large openings and wide open space in the south, and treats the south-west corner most strictly.
- Sump, borewell or underground tank in the south, south-east or south-west
- A main door in padas 5 to 8, toward the south-west
- Toilet or septic tank in the south-west corner
- More open space on the south than on the north
- Large windows or a wide balcony on the south wall
- A cut (missing) south-west corner, or a plot sloping down toward the south
Vastu treats the south-west as the zone of earth and stability, so practitioners rate defects here as the hardest to correct.
What Are the Vastu Remedies for a South Facing House?
Vastu remedies for a south facing house start with free, non-structural fixes in the entrance and the south-west. Remedies are traditional practices with no scientific verification.
- Light the entrance well, clear clutter and add a threshold.
- Move heavy furniture and storage to the south-west.
- Keep the north and east sides open and clean.
- Repaint the gate or door in a warm shade.
- Practitioners also suggest Vastu pyramids, strips or yantras at a door in an avoided pada. Check costs locally.
Remedy in place
Start hereFor a finished home or a rented flat.
- Door in pada 5 or 6
- Kitchen slightly off the south-east
- Light or open south-west
- Wrong colours or clutter
Relocate or rethink
CostlyOnly with an engineer, or before you buy.
- Door at the south-west corner
- Toilet or septic tank in the south-west
- Cut south-west corner
- Sump in the south-west
Shifting a door or opening a wall can affect beams and load paths. Get a structural engineer to check before any change.

Is a South Facing House a Worse Investment?
A south-facing house is not a worse investment by itself. Location, road width, ventilation, layout and build quality usually drive value more than facing.
Buyer sentiment is real, though. In 2024, the Bangalore Development Authority (BDA) said a lack of Vastu-compliant designs was one reason over 3,500 of its flats stayed unsold, alongside poor connectivity and build quality. Some buyers may use facing to negotiate.
A south-facing home with the door in pada 3 or 4 and a solid south-west is a better Vastu buy than a north-facing one with a north-east toilet.
We found no reliable data on price differences by facing in Bengaluru, so ask local brokers about recent sales.
Is a Vastu Consultation Worth It, and What Should You Check First?
A Vastu consultation is worth it before you finalise a plan or buy an awkward plot. For a standard flat, a self-check against this guide is usually enough.
Avoid any consultant who pushes costly demolition as the only fix, and ask which pada scheme they follow.
- Compass reading taken at the main door, away from metal
- Door in pada 3 or 4, not past the middle of the south wall
- No toilet, septic tank or sump in the south-west
- Kitchen in the south-east, master bedroom in the south-west
- More open space on the north and east than on the south
- Plot not sloping down toward the south
