Summary — what you need to know
  • MDF board is an engineered panel of wood fibres and resin with a smooth, even surface.
  • The main types are plain, pre-laminated, MR/HMR, HDF/HDHMR and fire-retardant.
  • An 18 mm 8 × 4 sheet costs about ₹2,100 (interior) to ₹3,400 (exterior) in 2026 listings.
  • No MDF is waterproof. Use HMR or HDHMR in kitchens and seal every edge.
  • Use 18 mm for shutters and carcasses, and 6–8 mm for back panels.

MDF board (medium-density fibreboard) is an engineered wood panel made by pressing fine wood fibres with resin under heat. In India it comes in five main types: plain, pre-laminated, moisture-resistant (MR or HMR), high-density (HDF or HDHMR) and fire-retardant. A standard 8 × 4 ft sheet of 18 mm MDF costs roughly ₹2,100–3,400, depending on grade and brand.

What Are the Main Types of MDF Board?

The main types of MDF board are plain, pre-laminated, moisture-resistant, high-density and fire-retardant. Each brand uses its own names, so check the data sheet rather than the label colour.

  • Plain (interior) MDF: a smooth, unfinished board for painting, veneering or laminating.
  • Pre-laminated MDF: factory-laminated on one or both faces, ready to cut and assemble.
  • Moisture-resistant (MR/HMR) MDF: made with water-resistant resins and often sold with a green core. Brands also sell it as exterior grade.
  • HDF and HDHMR: high-density fibreboard, and its high-density moisture-resistant version, for heavy wear and fine routing.
  • Fire-retardant MDF: treated to slow flame spread, used in offices and public interiors.

Which MDF Type Suits Which Job?

Use plain MDF for painted panels, pre-laminated MDF for wardrobes and shelves, and moisture-resistant or HDHMR for kitchens and areas near water.

What Does an 8 × 4 MDF Board Cost in India?

An 8 × 4 ft MDF board costs about ₹2,100 for 18 mm interior grade and about ₹3,400 for 18 mm exterior grade, based on online listings in 2026. Moisture-resistant and high-density boards cost more than plain interior boards.

What Pushes MDF Prices Up or Down?

MDF prices rise with thickness, density, moisture resistance, lamination and brand. Two "18 mm" boards can differ in density and resin quality, so the cheaper quote may not be the same product.

  • Thickness: price rises roughly with thickness.
  • Grade and density: HMR and HDHMR cost more than plain interior boards.
  • Lamination: double-side laminated sheets cost more than single-side.
  • Brand and certification: emission class (E1, E2 or CARB) and warranty add cost.
  • Location and dealer: transport and dealer margin change the final rate.

What Are the Pros and Cons of MDF?

MDF gives a smooth, even surface at a lower price than plywood, but it is heavier and weaker against water and screws.

Pros of MDF

Where it wins

Strong points of a good-quality board.

  • Smooth, knot-free surface that paints well
  • Cuts and routes cleanly for fluted and jali designs
  • Uniform thickness across the sheet
  • Usually cheaper than plywood of the same thickness

Cons of MDF

Plan around these

Limits to design around.

  • Swells if water reaches cut edges
  • Holds screws less firmly than plywood
  • Heavier than plywood, so long shelves sag
  • Fine dust when cut; use a mask and extraction

MDF vs HDF vs Plywood vs Particle Board: Which Should You Buy?

Choose HDF or HDHMR over MDF for wear and moisture, plywood for strength and screw-holding, and particle board only for low-cost, dry, light-duty furniture.

Decision rule

Use plywood for carcasses near water and for heavy loads. Use MDF or HDHMR for shutters and panels where a smooth, painted or laminated face matters most.

How Do You Choose the Right MDF Thickness?

Use 18 mm MDF for shutters, carcasses and shelves, and 6–8 mm for back panels and drawer bottoms. Typical choices are:

  • Wardrobe and kitchen shutters: 18 mm
  • Carcass sides and tops: 16–18 mm
  • Shelves: 18 mm, or 25 mm for spans over about 2.5 ft without support
  • Back panels and drawer bottoms: 6–8 mm
  • Wall panelling and CNC designs: 6–12 mm

18 mm exterior grade at ₹3,412 per sheet₹6,824

Edge banding, hinges, handles, laminate and labour are extra. A 7 ft shutter cut from an 8 ft sheet leaves offcuts you can use for shelves.

Red flags when buying MDF

  • Crumbly or soft edges when you press a fingernail into them
  • Thickness that varies across the sheet
  • No brand name, grade or batch marking on the board
  • "Waterproof" claims with no data sheet to back them up
  • An invoice that does not state brand, grade and thickness

The cheapest MDF sheet often costs more by the end of the job, once swollen edges and loose hinges need fixing.

How Should You Buy MDF Board?

Buy MDF board in three steps:

  1. Pick the grade by room: plain or pre-laminated for dry rooms, HMR or HDHMR for kitchens.
  2. Fix the thickness for each component and the brand before you compare prices.
  3. Ask for an itemised, dated quote that names brand, grade, thickness and sheet count.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many types of MDF board are there?

There are five main types of MDF board in India: plain interior MDF, pre-laminated MDF, moisture-resistant (MR/HMR or exterior grade) MDF, high-density HDF/HDHMR, and fire-retardant MDF.

What is the price of 8x4 MDF board?

An 8 × 4 ft MDF board of 18 mm thickness costs about ₹2,100 for interior grade and about ₹3,400 for exterior grade, based on 2026 online listings. Thinner boards cost less, and HDHMR or laminated boards cost more.

What is the price per square foot of MDF boards in different thicknesses?

Greenply's 2026 guide gives indicative rates of ₹60–110 per sq ft for standard interior MDF, ₹110–180 for high-density MDF and ₹180–250 for moisture-resistant MDF. Divide any sheet price by 32 to get the rate per sq ft of an 8 × 4 sheet.

What is the difference between interior and exterior grade MDF?

Interior grade MDF is made for dry indoor furniture and panels. Exterior grade, also called moisture-resistant or HMR MDF, uses water-resistant resins so it tolerates humidity better, but it is still not waterproof.

Which is best, MDF or HDF?

HDF, and its moisture-resistant version HDHMR, is denser, holds screws better and handles wear and humidity better than MDF. It also costs more, so use it for shutters, doors and kitchens, and plain MDF for dry, light-use panels.

What thicknesses do MDF boards come in?

MDF boards are commonly sold from about 6 mm to 25 mm thick, with thinner sheets of 2–5 mm also available. The most used thicknesses for furniture are 6, 8, 12, 16 and 18 mm.

What is the difference between plain MDF and prelaminated or laminated MDF?

Plain MDF has a bare surface that you paint, veneer or laminate on site. Pre-laminated MDF comes with a factory-bonded decorative laminate on one or both faces, so it is ready to cut and fit.

What standard sheet sizes are MDF boards sold in?

The standard MDF sheet size in India is 8 × 4 ft, which is 2440 × 1220 mm or 32 sq ft. Some brands also sell other sizes for specific uses.
