How to Fix Damp Patches on Walls Before Painting

Damp walls ruin fresh paint within months. Find the cause, dry the wall, and seal it before the first coat.

  3. What it costs

Damp is the top reason new paint peels. Paint only hides it. If you do not fix the cause, the patch comes back.

Find the cause first

Check for leaking pipes, cracks in the outer wall, and water pooling near the base. Press a dry sheet of plastic on the patch for a day. If the inside fogs, the damp is coming from the wall.

Do not skip this

Painting over a wet wall traps the moisture. The paint will bubble in weeks.

Dry and seal the wall

  1. Fix the leak or crack.
  2. Let the wall dry for 7 to 10 days.
  3. Scrape off loose paint and plaster.
  4. Apply a damp-proof primer.
  5. Paint two topcoats.

What it costs

Expect about ₹15 to ₹30 per sq ft for damp treatment, on top of normal painting costs.
