Summary — what you need to know
  • A junction box is a closed enclosure for wire joints only.
  • PVC suits most home wiring; metal boxes must be earthed.
  • Outdoors, read both IP digits: IP65 is dust-tight and jet-proof.
  • Leave wiring to a licensed electrician.

In junction box electrical terms, the box is a closed enclosure where wires are joined or branched. It shields joints from touch, dust and moisture and keeps them reachable for repairs.

IS 14772
BIS standard for household wiring boxes (2020)
IP65
Dust-tight and protected against water jets (IEC 60529)
IP67
Immersion to 1 m for 30 minutes (IEC 60529)

What Does an Electrical Junction Box Do?

It holds wire joints in one closed, reachable place: at ceiling light and fan points, along conduit runs and at outdoor lights.

Junction box vs switch box

A switch box holds a device; a junction box holds only joints. The distribution board houses MCBs; junction boxes sit further down the circuit.

Which Junction Box Electrical Type Suits Your Job?

The right type depends on where the box goes: material, mounting and protection all vary.

Common junction box types in Indian homes

Choose by location and wiring method
TypeKey traitBest used for
PVC Default pickLight, rust-proof, non-conductingConcealed and surface wiring indoors
Metal (MS or GI)Strong, conductive, must be earthedExposed, impact-prone runs
Round, 2/3/4-wayOne entry per side for conduitsCeiling points and conduit bends or tees
Weatherproof OutdoorGasketed lid, IP-rated, cable glandsTerraces, gardens, gate lights
"4-way" means four conduit entries, not a 4-way switch. A plug-in "extension box" is a power strip.

Flush (concealed)

New builds, renovations

Set inside the wall or slab.

  • Neat, hidden finish
  • Fixed before plastering
  • Cover must stay reachable

Surface mounted

Retrofits, exposed runs

Fixed on the wall face.

  • No wall chasing
  • Easy to inspect and extend
  • Visible on the wall

What Size Junction Box Do You Need?

Big enough that every joint sits without bending or pressing on the lid. More cables need a bigger box.

Don't overfill

Crammed wires heat up and loosen. When in doubt, go one size up.

What IP Rating Does an Outdoor Junction Box Need?

IP rating decoder

It needs a rating matched to the dust and water it faces. The first digit covers solids, the second water.

Common IP ratings decoded

Definitions per IEC 60529
RatingSolids (1st digit)Water (2nd digit)
IP44Objects over 1 mmSplashing from any direction
IP55Dust-protectedLow-pressure water jets
IP65 Open terracesDust-tightLow-pressure water jets
IP67Dust-tightTemporary immersion to 1 m
The rating holds only with sealed cable glands and a seated gasket.

How Is Junction Box Electrical Termination Done Safely?

A licensed electrician installs it with the circuit switched off and tested dead. India's CEA safety regulations expect licensed, qualified people to do this work. Never touch live wiring.

  1. Isolate: MCB off, circuit tested dead.
  2. Mount: fix the box where the cover stays reachable.
  3. Enter: one conduit or cable per entry or gland.
  4. Terminate: use connectors or terminal blocks, never tape.
  5. Close: earth metal boxes, then fit and screw down the lid.
  • BIS (ISI) mark with licence number
  • Material and IP rating suited to the location
  • Enough room for every joint
  • Warm lid, burning smell or brown marks
  • Cracked, brittle or thin-walled plastic
  • Missing lid or open knockouts
  • Damp around the box; fix the damp patch first
  • Buried under plaster or a gypsum false ceiling with no access

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an electrical junction box?

A closed box where wires are joined or branched. Its cover protects the joints and keeps them reachable for repairs.

What is a junction box used for in electrical?

It encloses joints wherever a circuit splits or a cable is extended, such as at a ceiling light point.

How does a junction box work?

Cables enter through knockouts or glands and are joined with connectors inside. The lid closes the joints off and contains heat or sparks from a fault.

What are the types of junction boxes?

PVC or metal, round or square, flush or surface mounted, and standard or weatherproof. Choose by location and wiring method.

What is the difference between an electrical box and a junction box?

A switch or socket box holds a device. A junction box holds only wire joints.

Where are junction boxes typically installed in a home?

At ceiling light and fan points, above false ceilings, along conduit runs and at outdoor lights. They must stay accessible.

How do I choose the right junction box for my wiring needs?

Match material to the wiring method, size to the cable count and IP rating to the location, and check for the BIS mark.

Why are junction boxes important for electrical safety?

Bare or loose joints can overheat, spark or shock. A closed box contains them and allows inspection.
