Getting the PoE Budget Right
- 192 W is the ceiling for all 16 ports combined. A typical fixed IP camera draws 4–8 W, so 16 of them fit comfortably. PTZ cameras and heated housings draw far more — add up your actual figures
- Leave headroom. Running at 95% of budget leaves nothing for a camera added later or a device drawing more than its rating in cold weather
- Budget is the number that matters. Add up what your devices draw and stay under the switch total, or ports will shut down
- Use Cat5e or better. PoE performance and reach depend on cable quality more than anything else
- Extend mode trades speed for distance. It reaches 250 m but drops those ports to 10 Mbps — fine for a standard camera, not for high-bitrate video
