A sliding door earns its place where a swing door cannot work. A hinged leaf needs a clear arc of floor to open into — roughly a square metre of otherwise usable room, permanently kept empty. A sliding door needs none of it, which is why sliding hardware is specified in compact bathrooms, wardrobes, partitions and utility spaces where that arc simply does not exist.

Rollers running on a matched track carry the leaf smoothly and quietly; a mismatched or under-rated roller set is what produces the juddering, noisy slide that makes people dislike sliding doors. 4) Why does my old sliding door judder?

Almost always under-rated or worn rollers, or a track that is not level. Rollers carrying more weight than they are designed for wear rapidly and never run smoothly again.

5) What do I need above the opening?

A structurally sound lintel or header. The track transfers the entire door weight into it, so plasterboard without proper backing is not adequate.
