D&H Secheron 309L is an AWS E309L-16 stainless steel electrode for joining dissimilar metals, such as mild or low-alloy steel to stainless steel, and for laying buffer layers before stainless overlays. Its higher chromium-nickel content dilutes safely into carbon steel without forming a brittle joint.
The extra-low carbon rutile-basic coating gives better corrosion resistance, a stable arc, low spatter and self-peeling slag for smooth, radiographic-quality beads. Suited to chemical plants, refineries, heat exchangers and furnace parts.
Key Features
- Dissimilar Metal Joining: Joins mild or low-alloy steel to stainless steel without brittle transitions
- Extra-Low Carbon: Limits carbide formation for better resistance to intergranular corrosion
- High-Temperature Resistance: Chromium-nickel weld metal resists oxidation and scaling up to about 1000°C
- Self-Peeling Slag: Slag lifts off easily for quick clean-up
- All-Position Welding: Stable arc in flat, horizontal, vertical-up and overhead positions

Recommendations & Ideal Use-Cases
Where this fits best
- Dissimilar Steel Joints: Carbon or structural steel to 304, 304L or 309 stainless steel
- Buffer Layers: First corrosion-resistant layer on mild steel before a final 308L stainless overlay
- High-Temperature Parts: Kiln parts, heat exchangers, exhaust manifolds and burner housings
1) How is 309L different from a standard 308L stainless steel electrode?
309L carries noticeably higher alloy content, about 24% chromium and 13% nickel, compared with 308L. When you weld stainless steel to mild or low-alloy steel, some carbon steel mixes into the weld pool; the extra alloy in 309L absorbs this dilution and still leaves a sound, crack-resistant joint. 308L is meant for welding stainless to stainless, so it is not the right choice for mixed-metal joints.
2) Do I need to bake the electrodes before use?
If the electrodes have been stored in a dry place in their sealed box, they can be used straight away. If they have been left open in damp air or on a humid site, bake them at 150 – 250°C for about one hour before use. This removes absorbed moisture, which can otherwise cause porosity and an unstable arc. Reseal or store unused electrodes in a dry place after opening.
3) Can I use it on a basic AC welding machine?
Yes. The rutile-basic coating strikes easily and holds a steady arc on AC machines, as well as on DC with the electrode positive (DC+). For the 2.5 mm size, set the current between 50 and 75 A, starting at the lower end for thin sheet and increasing for thicker sections.
4) What does the "L" in 309L mean?
"L" stands for extra-low carbon. Keeping carbon low reduces the formation of chromium carbides at the grain boundaries while the weld cools. This keeps chromium available to protect the steel and helps prevent intergranular corrosion along the weld seam, which matters in chemical, food and refinery environments.
5) Can I use it to weld cast iron?
No. 309L is designed for stainless steel and carbon or low-alloy steel. Cast iron behaves very differently when welded and needs a nickel-based cast iron electrode, along with the right preheat and cooling practice, to avoid cracking.
6) Which jobs is the 2.5 mm size best for?
The 2.5 mm x 350 mm electrode runs at low current, so it suits thinner sheet and plate, root passes, buffer layers and repair work where heat input needs to be controlled. It is a practical size for joining mild steel brackets or fittings to stainless steel equipment and for maintenance on heat exchangers and furnace parts.
