D&H Secheron SUPRATHERME is an AWS E7018 low-hydrogen welding electrode for medium-high tensile carbon steels and heavily loaded structures. Its heavy basic iron powder coating controls hydrogen in the weld, giving tough, ductile joints with excellent resistance to cracking, even on restrained joints and in low-temperature service.
The iron powder coating gives about 115% metal recovery for faster, more efficient welding. It runs with a stable arc in all positions, with low spatter and easy slag removal, and is suited to radiographic-quality work. Ideal for heavy engineering, structural fabrication, boilers, wagons, shipbuilding and plant maintenance. Available in 2.5 mm, 3.15 mm and 4.0 mm diameters.
Key Features
- Low-Hydrogen: Controls hydrogen to resist cracking on restrained and heavy joints
- ~115% Metal Recovery: Iron powder coating deposits more metal per electrode
- Tough Welds: Good toughness in low-temperature service
- Radiographic Quality: Designed for sound welds suitable for X-ray inspection
- All-Position Welding: Stable, controllable arc in all positions
- Low Spatter, Easy Slag Removal: Clean, uniform beads with less clean-up

Recommendations by Variant
Which size to choose
- 2.5 x 350 mm: Light structural braces, fillet welds, tack welds and root passes
- 3.15 x 450 mm: Medium steel frameworks, boiler tube repairs, earthmoving attachments and plant maintenance
- 4.0 x 450 mm: Heavy structural columns, thick plate, mining machinery and cranes
1) How is SUPRATHERME (E7018) different from an E6013 electrode such as NORMA-V?
SUPRATHERME is a low-hydrogen, iron powder basic electrode that gives stronger, tougher joints for heavily loaded and dynamic structures, and resists cracking on high-tensile steel. E6013 is a rutile electrode for general mild steel fabrication with lighter loads.
2) Do I need to bake these electrodes before use?
Yes. Low-hydrogen coatings absorb moisture from the air, so bake them at 250 – 300°C for about 1 – 2 hours before use. This removes moisture and helps prevent cold cracking and porosity. Keep baked electrodes warm and dry until used.
3) Which polarity gives the best results?
DC electrode positive (DC+) gives the smoothest metal transfer and good penetration. It can also be used on AC machines with a suitable open-circuit voltage.
4) Why are the 3.15 mm electrodes 450 mm long?
The longer 450 mm length means fewer electrode changes on long joints, so welders can work more continuously on structural assemblies and thick sections.
5) Can I use it on galvanized steel?
Grind the zinc coating off the weld area first; welding over zinc causes porosity and heavy spatter. Zinc fumes are hazardous, so always work with good ventilation or fume extraction.
