TP-Link TL-WR850N is a single-band N300 wireless router — a straightforward, low-cost unit for basic internet use in a small home, a shop, or a single room.

It is worth setting expectations honestly. This is an entry-level router: single band 2.4 GHz, 10/100 Mbps ports, 300 Mbps theoretical wireless. For browsing, email, social media and standard-definition to HD streaming on a handful of devices, it does the job perfectly well and costs very little.

What it is not suited to is a fast broadband plan or a busy household. The 10/100 Mbps ports cap your connection at around 100 Mbps no matter what you are paying for, and single-band 2.4 GHz is the crowded band — every neighbouring WiFi network and every microwave competes for it. If your plan is above 100 Mbps or you have many devices, the dual-band Gigabit Archer C6 is the better buy.

Technical Specifications

1) Will this handle my broadband speed?

Only up to around 100 Mbps — the WAN and LAN ports are 10/100 Mbps, not Gigabit. If your plan is faster than that, you will not get the speed you are paying for. Choose a Gigabit router such as the Archer C6 instead.

2) What does N300 mean?

Up to 300 Mbps theoretical wireless throughput on the 2.4 GHz band, under 802.11n (WiFi 4). Real-world speeds are lower, and shared across all connected devices.

3) Why does single band matter?

2.4 GHz is the crowded band — every neighbouring network, cordless phone and microwave competes for it. Dual-band routers can also use 5 GHz, which is quieter and faster though it travels less far through walls.

4) Is it good enough for streaming?

For standard and HD streaming on a few devices, yes. For 4K streaming, many simultaneous devices, or online gaming, choose a dual-band router with Gigabit ports.

5) How do I set it up?

Through the TP-Link Tether app on your phone, or a web browser. It takes a few minutes — connect it to your broadband line, follow the prompts, and set your network name and password.
