TP-Link 10/100 Mbps Switch is a plain unmanaged desktop switch in 5-port and 8-port versions — the simplest way to turn one Ethernet point into several.

It does one job. Your router has four LAN ports and you have six things to plug in; or a single network point serves a room that now needs a desktop, a printer and a TV. A switch splits that one connection into five or eight, with no configuration, no login and nothing to go wrong.

It is worth being clear about what it does not do. There is no PoE, so it will not power cameras or access points — every connected device needs its own power supply. And ports run at 10/100 Mbps, not Gigabit, which is fine for internet browsing, printers, and streaming, but a real constraint for large file transfers across a local network.

Key Features

  • Turns one network point into five or eight: The whole purpose, done simply
  • Genuinely plug and play: No configuration, no login, no software
  • Fanless and silent: Suitable for a desk, a living room, or a reception counter
  • Auto MDI/MDIX: Any cable works — no crossover leads to worry about
  • Low power draw: Cheap to leave running continuously

5-Port or 8-Port?

Model Ports Typically suits
LS1005 5 A desk, a TV point, or a small room — four devices plus the uplink
LS1008 8 A small office, a study, or a rack of devices — seven devices plus the uplink

Remember that one port is used by the incoming cable, so a 5-port switch connects four devices and an 8-port connects seven. If you are close to the limit, take the larger one.

What This Switch Does Not Do

  • No PoE. It will not power IP cameras or access points — those need a PoE switch such as the LS105GP or LS110P
  • Not Gigabit. Ports run at 10/100 Mbps. Fine for internet, printers and streaming; slow for moving large files between computers on the same network
  • For Gigabit, TP-Link’s LS1005G and LS1008G are the equivalent models
  • It does not extend WiFi. A switch adds wired ports only — for wireless coverage you need an access point

1) Will this speed up my internet?

No. A switch adds ports, it does not add speed. Your internet speed is set by your connection. What it does prevent is running out of places to plug things in.

2) Can it power a CCTV camera?

No — there is no PoE on these models. Every connected device needs its own power supply. For powering cameras over the network cable, you need a PoE switch such as the LS105GP or LS110P.

3) Is 10/100 Mbps fast enough?

For internet browsing, streaming, printers and IP cameras, yes — typical home broadband and camera streams sit well within it. For moving large files between computers on your own network, Gigabit is noticeably faster. The LS1005G and LS1008G are the Gigabit equivalents.

4) How many devices can I actually connect?

One port less than the port count, because the incoming cable from your router uses one. So four devices on the LS1005, seven on the LS1008.

5) Do I need to set it up?

No. Plug the incoming cable into any port and your devices into the rest. Auto MDI/MDIX means any standard Ethernet cable works.
