Taparia PVC Insulation Tape IT17B is 17 mm black electrical tape — the consumable every electrical job goes through.
PVC is used rather than cloth or paper because it does three things at once: it insulates electrically, resists moisture, and stretches. That stretch is what makes it work on a real joint — the tape conforms tightly around irregular shapes, bends and joins without leaving air gaps, and the tension holds it in place.
Black is the standard general-purpose colour. Coloured insulation tape exists for phase identification, but black is what most joints get wrapped in.
Worth being clear about scope: insulation tape is for insulating and protecting a properly made joint. It is not a way to join conductors, not a repair for damaged cable insulation on a live circuit, and not a substitute for a proper connector or junction box.
Key Features
- Stretches and conforms: Wraps tightly around irregular joints with no air gaps
- Electrically insulating and moisture resistant
- 17 mm width: The common size for general electrical work
- Pressure-sensitive adhesive: Sticks on contact, no heat or primer needed
- Black: The standard general-purpose colour
- Made by Taparia Tools — an ISO-9001 company manufacturing hand tools in India since 1969, in technical collaboration with Bahco of Sweden

What Insulation Tape Is — and Is Not
- It insulates a properly made joint. It does not make the joint. Conductors must be mechanically and electrically connected first, by a connector, crimp or terminal — tape alone is not a connection
- It is not a repair for damaged cable on a live circuit. Isolate first, and replace or properly repair damaged cable rather than taping over it
- Stretch it as you wrap and overlap each turn by about half the width, so there are no gaps
- Start and finish on sound insulation, not on bare conductor, and wrap well past the joint at both ends
- Check the voltage rating on the pack before using it on anything beyond ordinary domestic wiring
1) What is insulation tape actually for?
Insulating and protecting a joint that has already been properly made — and bundling or identifying cable. It is not a way to join conductors together.
2) Can I join two wires with just tape?
No, and this is worth being firm about. Conductors must be mechanically and electrically connected first with a connector, crimp or terminal. Tape over twisted wires is not a connection — it works loose, heats up and is a genuine fire risk.
3) How should I wrap it?
Stretch it slightly as you go and overlap each turn by about half the tape width. Start and finish on sound insulation rather than bare conductor, and carry the wrap well past the joint at both ends.
4) Can I use it to repair damaged cable?
Not as a permanent fix. Isolate the circuit first, then replace the cable or make a proper repair in an enclosure. Tape over damaged insulation hides a fault rather than fixing it.
5) Does the colour mean anything?
It can. Coloured insulation tape is used for phase identification in some installations. Black is the standard general-purpose colour for ordinary insulating and bundling work.
