Taparia Crimping Tool CTR06 crimps terminals and lugs onto cable from 0.5 to 6 sq mm — the range that covers most domestic and light commercial wiring.
A crimp done properly is a gas-tight connection: the tool compresses the lug barrel around the conductor hard enough that the two metals cold-weld together, leaving no air gap for oxidation to start in. Done with pliers instead, you get a squashed lug that looks similar and behaves completely differently — it holds mechanically for a while, oxidises at the interface, and slowly develops resistance until the joint runs hot.
That is why the sized crimping positions on the jaws matter. Each is matched to a cable size, and using the right one applies the correct compression. Too large a position under-compresses and the lug pulls off; too small over-compresses and cuts the strands.
Key Features
- Sized crimping positions: Matched to cable size, so each crimp gets the right compression
- 0.5 to 6 sq mm range: Covers most domestic and light commercial wiring
- Makes a gas-tight joint: Cold-welds lug to conductor, leaving no gap for oxidation
- Far better than pliers: A squashed lug looks similar and fails slowly and invisibly
- Insulated handles for grip and comfort
- Made by Taparia Tools — an ISO-9001 company manufacturing hand tools in India since 1969, in technical collaboration with Bahco of Sweden

Getting a Sound Crimp
- Match the jaw position to the cable size. Too large under-compresses and the lug pulls off; too small cuts the strands. This is the whole skill of crimping
- Strip to the right length. All strands should sit inside the barrel with no conductor showing beyond it and no insulation trapped inside
- Pull-test every crimp. A sound crimp will not come off with a firm tug — if it moves, cut it off and redo it
- Never crimp with pliers. It is the most common shortcut in electrical work and the cause of a great many hot joints
- Insulated sleeves are for grip and comfort, not electrical protection. Unless a tool is VDE certified and tested to 1000 V, do not rely on it for live work
- Keep it dry and lightly oiled. Hand tools rust quickly through a Bengaluru monsoon
- Use the tool for its intended job — most hand tool failures come from using one as a pry bar or lever
1) Why not just squash the lug with pliers?
Because the joint fails slowly and invisibly. A proper crimp is gas-tight — the metals cold-weld with no air gap. A squashed lug holds mechanically at first, then oxidises at the interface and develops resistance until it runs hot.
2) How do I pick the right jaw position?
Match it to the cable size, using the markings on the jaws. Too large a position under-compresses and the lug pulls off; too small over-compresses and cuts through the strands. Getting this right is most of the skill.
3) How do I know the crimp is good?
Pull-test it. Give the lug a firm tug — a sound crimp will not move. If it slides or comes off, cut it away and redo it. It takes two seconds and catches the joint that would otherwise fail in a year.
4) What cable sizes does it handle?
0.5 to 6 sq mm, which covers most domestic and light commercial wiring. For larger cable you need a heavier crimping tool, often hydraulic.
5) Can I use it on live circuits?
No. The insulated sleeves are for grip and comfort, not electrical protection. Isolate the circuit before working, and use VDE-certified tools if live work is genuinely unavoidable.
