This Heavy-Duty Metal Spade Mumty is an everyday tool for construction sites, gardens and farms. Its wide, flat 225 x 320 mm mild steel (MS) blade pulls and spreads material efficiently, while the solid wooden handle gives good grip and leverage.

On site, use it to hand-mix cement and mortar, gather sand and clear rubble. In the field or garden, it shifts soil, shapes ridges and irrigation channels, and cuts through sod and surface roots. The handle fits into a riveted 45 mm ring socket for a firm, tight joint.

Usage & Care

1) Does the handle come fixed to the blade?

No. The blade and handle are supplied as separate loose pieces. They are matched: the socket has a 45 mm opening and the handle end is tapered to fit snugly. You can tap the handle in by hand in a few minutes. For heavy daily use, we recommend driving a screw or pin through the socket so the handle cannot slip or turn.

2) Can it cut through roots and hard soil?

Yes, the straight 225 mm edge slices well through sod, surface roots and compacted soil. For very hard, rocky or clay-heavy ground, loosen the soil first with a pickaxe or crowbar, then use the mumty to pull and shape it. This also protects the blade and handle from damage.

3) How is a mumty different from a round shovel?

A round shovel is made for scooping loose material and deep digging. A flat, rectangular mumty is better for pulling soil and material towards you, mixing cement and mortar on a flat surface, levelling ground, weeding and shaping irrigation channels.

4) How do I care for the wooden handle?

Store the tool in a dry place, out of rain and harsh sun, so the wood doesn't crack or splinter. If the handle becomes rough over time, sand it lightly and wipe it with a thin coat of linseed oil to restore a smooth, water-resistant grip.
