Makita M3601B 900W Plunge Router cuts grooves, rebates, mouldings, and edge profiles in timber and board, with a 0–35 mm plunge capacity and 27,000 RPM. Unlike a fixed-base trimmer, a plunge router lets you start a cut in the middle of a panel — lower the spinning bit into the workpiece, cut, and lift out — which is what you need for housings, mortises, and inlays.

Three pre-set depth stops on the plunge adjustment lever are the feature that saves real time. Deep grooves should be cut in progressive passes rather than one heavy bite, and pre-set stops let you step down through the same depths repeatably instead of measuring each time. Easy-to-read depth scales back that up.

The collet takes both 6 mm and 8 mm bits, so you're not restricted to the smallest shank sizes and can use larger profile cutters with more stability. A chip deflector directs waste away from your face, and rubberised contoured handles with the switch built in mean your hands stay where the control is. A straight guide is included for grooving and chamfering parallel to an edge.

1) What is the difference between a plunge router and a trimmer?

A plunge router can start a cut in the middle of a panel by lowering the spinning bit into the work — essential for housings, mortises, and inlays. A fixed-base trimmer like the M3700B sets its depth before you start and works from an edge. The router is also more powerful at 900 W against 530 W.

2) What bits will it take?

It accepts 6 mm and 8 mm shank bits (1/4" and 3/8"), so you can use larger profile cutters that run more stably than small-shank bits. A straight bit and collet cone are supplied.

3) How deep can it cut in one pass?

Plunge capacity is 0–35 mm, but don't take that in one bite. Cut deep grooves in progressive passes — that's exactly what the three pre-set depth stops are for, and it gives a cleaner cut with far less strain on the bit and motor.

4) Can I use it for straight cuts along a long panel?

Yes. The supplied straight guide handles cuts parallel to an edge, and with an optional guide rail adapter set and guide rail you can make long, accurate straight cuts anywhere on a panel.

5) What safety gear do I need?

Safety goggles and ear protection at minimum — it runs at 91 dB(A). A dust mask is strongly advised when routing MDF, which produces very fine dust. Always clamp the workpiece, and let the bit reach full speed before plunging.
