Makita M0600B 400W Corded Drill is a compact variable-speed reversing drill with a 10 mm keyed chuck, built for accurate everyday drilling in metal, wood, and plastic. At 1.2 kg it's one of the lightest mains drills Makita makes, which matters more than it sounds when you're working overhead in a ceiling or holding the tool at arm's length inside a panel.

The variable-speed trigger lets you start a hole slowly so the bit bites where you marked it instead of skating across the surface, then bring it up to 3,000 RPM once it's seated. An in-line grip design puts your hand directly behind the chuck so your push goes into the cut rather than twisting the tool. Reversing lets it back out a jammed bit or drive and remove screws.

Note there is no hammer function — this is a pure rotary drill for metal, wood, and plastic. For masonry, you want the M0801B hammer drill.

Key Features

  • Variable speed trigger: Start slowly for accurate bit placement, then run up to full speed
  • In-line positive grip design: Puts your thrust directly behind the bit for better control
  • 1.2 kg light body: Reduces fatigue on overhead and extended-reach work
  • Reversing switch: Backs out jammed bits and drives or removes screws
  • Recessed lock-on button: Continuous running without holding the trigger, positioned so it isn't hit accidentally
  • Double insulated: Additional protection against electric shock

Recommended Applications

Where this drill fits best

  • Electrical work: Holes in boards, enclosures, and panel plates
  • Light fabrication: Holes up to 10 mm in mild steel sections and sheet
  • Carpentry: Pilot and clearance holes up to 20 mm in timber
  • Furniture assembly: Screw driving and hinge pilot holes
  • Maintenance work: Light drilling where a heavier tool is unwieldy

1) Can this drill into concrete or brick walls?

No. The M0600B has no hammer function — it's a rotary drill for metal, wood, and plastic. Trying it on masonry will blunt the bit and stress the motor without making real progress. For walls, use the M0801B hammer drill or the M8700B rotary hammer.

2) What is the maximum hole size it will drill?

10 mm in steel and 20 mm in wood, with a 10 mm chuck. Going beyond that will stall the motor rather than cut faster.

3) Does it need a chuck key?

Yes — it has a keyed chuck, and the chuck key (S10) is supplied in the box. A keyed chuck grips round-shank bits more firmly than a keyless chuck under load, which is why Makita specifies it here.

4) Can I use it as a screwdriver?

Yes. Variable speed plus forward and reverse rotation make it usable for driving and removing screws — start slowly so the bit seats in the screw head before applying torque.

5) How does this compare to the M0801B?

The M0600B is a lighter 400 W rotary-only drill at 1.2 kg, better for precision work and long overhead sessions. The M0801B is a 500 W hammer drill at 1.7 kg that also drills 16 mm into concrete. If you ever drill walls, buy the M0801B; if your work is metal, wood, and panels, this one is easier to live with.
