Jaquar Thin Rim Table Top Basin (JDS-WHT-25909) is a rectangular vitreous china basin from Jaquar's Designer Series, measuring 495 x 395 x 150 mm, made to sit on top of a counter.

The thin rim is the point of it, and it is a harder thing to manufacture than it looks. Ceramic is easier to make thick; producing a slim, even rim in vitreous china without warping or weakness takes better moulding and firing control. The result is a basin whose edge reads as a crisp line rather than a heavy lip, which is what gives a designer basin its contemporary look. Set against a rectangular bowl, it gives you sharp geometry rather than the softer profile of a conventional basin.

At 495 x 395 mm it is generously sized — a proper main-bathroom basin with room to wash your face and hands comfortably without water going over the edge. The 150 mm height is 25 mm shallower than the Continental, which means your counter can sit slightly higher for the same finished rim height.

1) What does “thin rim” actually mean?

The bowl edge is slim rather than a thick lip, so it reads as a crisp line. It is harder to manufacture than a conventional rim — producing a slim, even edge in vitreous china without warping takes better moulding and firing control — and it is what gives a designer basin its contemporary look.

2) How high should I build my counter?

Lower than a normal vanity, because the basin adds 150 mm on top. Aim for a finished rim height of roughly 800–850 mm and work backwards, which usually means a counter around 675–700 mm. Decide this before the carpentry is made.

3) Which tap do I need?

A tall basin mixer or a wall-mounted spout. A standard deck-mounted tap is too short to clear a raised bowl. Choose the tap at the same time as the basin — it is the most common thing people get wrong with a table top installation.

4) Will it fit my vanity?

At 495 mm wide and 395 mm front to back, it needs a reasonably deep counter, plus clearance behind the bowl for the tap. Measure your intended counter before ordering. If space is tight, the more compact Continental basin (425 x 340 mm) may suit better.

5) Should I choose this or the Continental basin?
