Gyproc Plain Gypsum Board is the standard 12.5 mm board used for false ceilings and internal partitions — a gypsum core faced with paper liner on both sides, supplied here as a set of 2 boards measuring 1219 x 1829 mm (4 x 6 ft).

12.5 mm is the working standard for ceilings and partitions in India, and for good reason. It is stiff enough to span normal framing centres without visible sag, takes a screw without crumbling around the head, and gives a solid surface to skim and paint. Thinner board flexes between supports and shows every framing member; thicker board is heavier to lift overhead for a benefit most rooms do not need.

This 4 x 6 ft size is shorter than the common 4 x 8 ft board, and that is a practical trade-off rather than a compromise. A shorter board is substantially easier to carry up a stairwell, fit in a lift, and lift overhead with two people — which matters in a flat. The cost is that you get more joints across a given ceiling, and every joint has to be taped and filled. For smaller rooms and access-restricted sites it is the sensible choice; for a large open ceiling, fewer longer boards mean less finishing work.

Gypsum has one quiet advantage worth knowing: the core holds chemically combined water. Under heat that water is released as steam before the board itself breaks down, which is why gypsum is used as a lining material at all. That is a property of the material, not a fire rating — for rated construction, Gyproc makes a specific fire-resistant board.

1) How many sets do I need for my ceiling?

Each board covers about 2.23 sq m (24 sq ft), so a set of 2 covers roughly 4.46 sq m (48 sq ft). Measure your ceiling area, divide by 4.46, and add a margin for wastage — offcuts around lights, vents, corners and edges are unavoidable, and running short mid-job means a second delivery.

2) Can I use this board in a bathroom or kitchen?

No, and this is the most important thing on the page. This is plain board and it is not moisture resistant. In a bathroom or anywhere exposed to steam or splashing it absorbs moisture, softens, sags and eventually crumbles — and the failure usually shows months after the ceiling has been finished and painted. Use a moisture-resistant board in those areas instead.

3) Why 4 x 6 ft rather than the usual 4 x 8?

Handling. A shorter board is far easier to carry up a stairwell, get into a lift and hold overhead — which matters in a flat. The trade-off is more joints across a given ceiling, and every joint has to be taped and filled. For small rooms and difficult access it is the better choice; for a large open ceiling, longer boards mean less finishing.

4) What else do I need to install it?

The board is one part of the job. You also need the GI ceiling grid — ceiling sections, intermediate channels, perimeter channels, cleats and hangers — plus drywall screws, joint tape and jointing compound. 5) How do I cut it?

Score and snap. Run a sharp knife along a straight edge to cut the paper face, snap the board back along the line, then cut the paper on the reverse. No power tools are needed for straight cuts, which also avoids the considerable dust a saw creates. Use a keyhole saw or hole cutter for light fittings and vents.
