Futura FS 501 is an 18" x 16" single bowl undermount kitchen sink in satin-finish stainless steel, from Futura’s Undermount Series. It comes with a basket waste coupling included, and a non-stick fry pan worth ₹999 inside the box.

The material specification is worth reading properly, because it is where sinks differ most and where the difference does not show in a showroom. This is grade 304 stainless steel (18/8) — 18% chromium, 8% nickel. Chromium is what forms the passive layer that resists rust; nickel is what keeps the steel stable and stops it pitting when it sits in contact with salt, acidic food and detergent day after day. Cheaper sinks are commonly made from 202-grade steel, which carries little or no nickel and looks identical on day one. The difference appears two monsoons later as pitting and staining around the drain.

The bowl is 16" x 14" and a full 9" deep. Depth is the specification that decides whether a sink is pleasant to use: a 9" bowl takes a stacked pile of dishes, a large kadai or a pressure cooker below the rim, and it keeps splashes inside the sink rather than across the counter. The satin finish is the practical choice too — it diffuses light, so water spots, fine scratches and everyday marks are far less visible than on a mirror-polished surface.

1) What does “undermount” mean, and will it suit my kitchen?

The sink is fixed underneath the countertop rather than dropped into it, so no rim sits on the surface and you can sweep crumbs and water straight into the bowl. It needs a solid counter — granite, quartz or engineered stone — cut to the sink’s template by your fabricator. If your counter is laminate, or already cut for a drop-in sink, you need a top-mount sink instead.

2) Will it fit my cabinet?

It needs a minimum 21" base cabinet. The sink itself measures 18" x 16" overall, but the cabinet has to be wider to allow for the counter overhang and the fixing. Measure your cabinet before ordering.

3) Why does SS 304 matter compared with a cheaper sink?

Grade 304 is 18% chromium and 8% nickel. Chromium forms the layer that resists rust; nickel is what stops the steel pitting in constant contact with salt, acidic food and detergent. Cheaper sinks are often 202 grade, with little or no nickel — identical in a showroom, but pitting and staining around the drain within a couple of years.

4) Is the waste coupling included, or do I buy it separately?

Included. A basket waste coupling comes with the sink, which is worth noting because many brands charge for it separately. You will still need a tap, a waste pipe to the floor trap, and inlet hoses.

5) When should I order — before or after the countertop is made?

Before. Your fabricator needs the actual sink in hand to template the cut-out against, and to drill the tap hole in the right place. Ordering the counter first, or cutting it to a drawing, is how undermount installations go wrong — and stone cannot be uncut.
