  • Manufacturer: Asian Paints Limited
  • Product: WoodTech PU Thinner
  • Purpose: Diluting and thinning polyurethane (PU) wood finishes
  • Sizes Available: 1 litre and 3 litre
  • Improves Levelling: Helps the film flow out smoothly instead of showing brush marks
  • Better Film Formation: Supports an even, continuous coating
  • Faster Drying: Speeds up film drying between coats
  • Important: Flammable solvent — read the safety guidance below before use

Asian Paints WoodTech PU Thinner is the solvent made for diluting Asian Paints polyurethane wood finishes to the correct application viscosity. It is a matched component of the WoodTech PU system, not a general-purpose thinner.

That distinction is the whole point of buying it. A PU finish cures by chemical reaction, and the solvent you add takes part in how that reaction proceeds and how the film forms. Use the thinner formulated for the system and you get better levelling, better film formation and faster drying — the film flows out smoothly rather than holding brush marks, and it sets as a continuous coat. Use a cheap general thinner or an NC thinner instead and the same PU finish can bloom, cure poorly, or fail to adhere, which means sanding an expensive coating back off and starting again.

Thinning is not optional on most PU applications either. Straight from the tin a PU finish is usually too viscous to spray, and too heavy to brush without marks. The data sheet for your specific finish gives the correct ratio — follow that, not a rule of thumb, because over-thinning reduces build and film strength just as surely as under-thinning causes runs and brush drag.

Safety — Read Before Use

  • Highly flammable. Keep away from open flames, sparks, heaters, and hot work. No smoking anywhere near where it is being used or stored
  • Solvent vapour is heavier than air. It sinks and collects at floor level, where it can reach an ignition source several metres from the open tin — a water heater pilot light or a switch at skirting level is enough
  • Ventilate thoroughly. Work with doors and windows open and air moving. Never use it in a closed room, a basement, or any confined space
  • Wear PPE: solvent-resistant gloves, safety goggles, and an appropriate organic-vapour respirator — a dust mask offers no protection against solvent vapour
  • Solvent-soaked rags can catch fire on their own if left bundled. Spread them flat outdoors to dry fully, or seal them in a metal container with water. Never leave them in a heap or a bin bag
  • Keep the container tightly closed when not in use, and store it upright in a cool, well-ventilated place away from sunlight and heat
  • Keep away from children and pets, and never decant it into a drinks bottle or an unlabelled container

Key Features

  • Better levelling: The film flows out smoothly instead of holding brush marks and ridges
  • Better film formation: Supports an even, continuous coating rather than a patchy one
  • Faster film drying: Shortens the wait between coats
  • Matched to the PU system: Formulated for Asian Paints polyurethane finishes, not a generic solvent
  • Two pack sizes: 1 litre for a single job, 3 litre for larger or ongoing work

Which Pack Size?

Size Typically suits
1 litre A single piece of furniture, a door set, or occasional touch-up work
3 litre Full interior joinery, a modular kitchen finish, or contractors working continuously

Buy to your actual requirement rather than stockpiling. Thinner is a flammable liquid, so the less of it sitting in a workshop or a home, the better.

Getting a Good Finish

Practical Notes

  • Follow the finish’s data sheet for the ratio. It varies by product and by whether you are brushing or spraying — there is no single correct figure
  • On two-pack PU, mix base and hardener first, then thin. Pot life starts the moment the two are combined, so mix only what you can use
  • Do not over-thin. Beyond the stated ratio you lose film build and durability — you end up applying more coats to get the same protection
  • Keep moisture out. PU systems react with moisture, so keep the thinner container closed and avoid working in damp conditions or on damp timber
  • Clean tools promptly with the thinner before the finish cures — once a PU film has hardened on a brush, it does not come off

1) What is PU thinner used for?

Diluting polyurethane wood finishes to the right consistency for brushing or spraying. Straight from the tin a PU finish is usually too thick to spray and too heavy to brush without leaving marks.

2) Can I use ordinary thinner or NC thinner instead?

No, and it is a costly mistake. A PU finish cures by chemical reaction, and the solvent takes part in how the film forms. General or NC thinner on a PU system can cause blooming, poor cure, or adhesion failure — meaning you sand an expensive finish back off and start again. The few rupees saved per litre are not worth it.

3) How much thinner should I add?

Follow the data sheet of the finish you are thinning, not a rule of thumb. The ratio differs by product and by application method — spraying needs more than brushing. Over-thinning reduces film build and durability, so you end up applying more coats for the same protection.

4) Is it safe to use indoors?

Only with thorough ventilation. This is a flammable solvent and its vapour is heavier than air, so it sinks and collects at floor level where it can reach a pilot light or a low switch. Work with doors and windows open, never in a closed room or basement, and wear an organic-vapour respirator — a dust mask does nothing against solvent vapour.

5) How should I dispose of rags and leftover thinner?

Rags soaked in solvent or PU finish can catch fire on their own if left bundled, because the coating generates heat as it cures. Spread them flat outdoors to dry fully, or seal them in a metal container with water. Never bin a heap of them. Leftover thinner should be kept tightly closed in its original container, or disposed of through proper chemical waste channels — never poured down a drain.
