Sheenlac D-13X NC Thinner is a fast-evaporating economy thinner that adjusts the viscosity of nitrocellulose (NC) primers, sealers, lacquers and wood finishes so they flow smoothly without slowing the drying time or causing wrinkling. It suits carpentry, automotive refinishing and industrial paint workshops, and its strong solvency also cleans paint guns and tools and wipes up paint or adhesive spills. It is for NC finishes only; it is not for polyurethane or epoxy. It is highly flammable, so store and use it away from heat and sparks.
Key Features
- Consistent Viscosity Reduction: Quickly breaks heavy-bodied lacquers down to a workable consistency
- Fast Evaporation: Speeds up touch-dry time for efficient multi-layer recoating, and helps the finish level out without orange peel or brush streaks
- Cleans Equipment: Dissolves paint residue inside spray nozzles and on tools

1) Can I use D-13X to thin PU or epoxy topcoats?
No. D-13X is an economy thinner for nitrocellulose (NC) finishes and primers. For polyurethane finishes, use a specialised PU thinner such as Sheenlac D-67 or D-27, to avoid curdling or curing failures.
2) How much thinner should I add?
For NC basecoats and sealers, add up to 200% thinner by volume. For NC topcoats and clear lacquers, add up to 100% by volume. Add it gradually while stirring until the paint reaches the working viscosity you need, and test on a small piece before wide application, because the right amount depends on your spray nozzle or brush and the temperature.
3) How long does it keep, and how should I store it?
In standard commercial PET plastic bottles it keeps for only 6 months, so check the date. It is highly flammable (flash point above 10°C), so store it in a cool, sheltered, well-ventilated place away from heat, grinding sparks and electrical sockets, with the caps screwed on tight to stop vapour build-up and evaporation loss.
4) Why is fast evaporation important?
The solvents flash off quickly once the paint leaves the spray tip, so the film sets rapidly. That reduces sags on vertical surfaces and stops airborne wood dust from settling into the wet finish.
5) Can I use it to clean paint off my hands or skin?
No. It works well on metal tools, spray equipment and floors, but avoid prolonged skin contact. Strong solvents strip the skin's natural oils and can cause severe dryness or chemical irritation. Use a barrier cream or a citrus-based paint cleanser for your skin.
