Khurpi is the flat-bladed scraper used to strip old paint, lift hardened putty, and clean plaster and cement splashes off surfaces before finishing work begins.

The blade does the whole job, and stiffness is the point. A rigid blade lets you drive the edge under a paint film or a lump of set putty and lift it away in one movement. That is the opposite of a flexible putty knife, which is made to bend and follow a surface while applying filler. The two tools look alike and get confused constantly — a stiff scraper used to apply putty leaves ridges, and a flexible knife used to scrape simply bends and skids.

The shape is functional too. The blade is widest at the working edge and tapers back, which puts the mass and the leverage where the work is happening while keeping the tool light in the hand. Preparation is slow, repetitive work, and a few grams saved matters over a wall.

The tang runs into the wooden handle and is riveted, which is what lets you lean weight onto the tool without the blade working loose. A scraper takes more direct force than almost any other hand tool of its size, and the blade-to-handle joint is where a poor one fails first.

1) Is this the khurpi used for gardening?

No. The word khurpi is used for two different tools. This is the flat-bladed scraper — a wide, stiff steel blade for stripping paint, putty and plaster. The gardening khurpi is a different tool with a narrow, often curved blade for loosening soil and lifting weeds, and it will not do this job any more than this will do that one.

2) What is the difference between a scraper and a putty knife?

Stiffness, and the direction of the job. A scraper has a rigid blade for removing material — the stiffness is what drives the edge under paint or set putty. A putty knife has a flexible blade for applying filler, bending to follow the surface. Use a scraper to apply putty and you get ridges; use a putty knife to scrape and it just bends.

3) The blade has stopped biting — can I sharpen it?

Yes, and you should. A scraper works by its edge, and that edge dulls and rounds over with use. A few strokes along the edge with a flat file restores the bite in under a minute. Keep the edge square rather than putting a knife-like bevel on it — a square edge scrapes better and lasts longer.
