HDPE is the right plastic for a storage drum. High-Density Polyethylene is rigid, takes an impact without cracking, resists a broad range of chemicals, and does not rust — which a steel drum eventually will anywhere water sits or condensation forms. It also holds up outdoors considerably better than most plastics, though any plastic lasts longer out of direct sun.

Three design details make it genuinely usable, and each solves a real problem. The open top means you can reach in: scoop grain out, lift a tool from the bottom, and — the part people forget — clean the inside properly. A sealed bung-top drum cannot really be cleaned internally at all, which rules it out for anything stored repeatedly.

The locking ring is the difference between a lid and a closure. Without one, a lid simply rests on top: it lifts in wind, it will not keep rodents out, and it will not stop rain getting in. A locking ring clamps it down so the drum genuinely stays shut.

The side handles sound like a minor detail until you have tried moving a drum without them. They let two people lift and carry it rather than dragging or rolling it, and they make a part-filled drum far easier to tip and pour. The opaque blue is functional too — it blocks light, and light is what lets algae grow in standing water.

1) Can I store chemicals in it?

HDPE is the standard material for chemical storage drums and handles a wide range — most acids and alkalis, salts, detergents, fertilisers and agricultural sprays. It is a poor match for some solvents, particularly aromatic and chlorinated hydrocarbons, and for strong oxidisers. Every chemical's safety data sheet lists the container materials it is compatible with, so check yours against HDPE before filling the drum.

2) Can I store drinking water in it?

Only if the drum is made from virgin food-grade HDPE rather than recycled resin. Food-grade drums carry a marking to that effect — usually a cup-and-fork symbol or an explicit "food grade" stamp moulded into the body or the lid. If there is no such marking, treat it as non-potable and use it for washing, gardening, livestock or construction water instead.

3) What does the locking ring actually do?

It turns a lid into a closure. Without one, a lid simply rests on top — it lifts in wind, it will not keep rodents out, and it will not stop rain getting in. A locking ring clamps the lid down onto the rim so the drum genuinely stays shut, which is what makes it usable for grain or for anything kept outdoors.

4) Can I move it once it is full?

Not easily. A full 90 litre drum of water weighs about 90 kg. The side handles mean two people can lift it when it is part filled, and they make tipping and pouring far easier — but a completely full drum is a fill-in-place item. Decide where it is going and put it there before filling, on firm, level ground.

5) How do I keep it clean, and stored water fresh?

The open top is what makes this practical — you can get a hand and a brush right inside, which a sealed bung-top drum does not allow. Rinse it out with clean water before first use and periodically after that. For stored water, the opaque blue body already blocks the light that algae need, so keeping the lid closed and the drum out of direct sun is usually enough to keep it clear.
