A thermostatic mixer holds your chosen water temperature steady even when pressure changes elsewhere in the house, so the shower doesn't run cold when someone opens a tap or flushes a cistern downstairs.

The 3-way diverter is what makes this a full shower system control rather than a simple on/off valve. One handle sets and holds the temperature; the other selects which outlet the water goes to — typically an overhead rain shower, a hand shower, and a third outlet such as body jets or a bath spout. You will need one more part. This is an exposed part kit — the visible wall plate and handles only. The working thermostatic valve sits inside the wall and is a separate product, Jaquar's concealed body ALD-683N, sold separately. On its own, this kit cannot deliver water. Order both together unless a compatible concealed body is already installed in your wall.

2) What does a thermostatic mixer actually do?

It holds the water at the temperature you set, even when supply pressure changes. If someone opens a tap or flushes a cistern elsewhere in the house, an ordinary mixer would swing hot or cold — a thermostatic valve compensates automatically.
