Taparia PVC Pipe Cutter PC42 cuts plastic pipe up to 42 mm outside diameter with a ratcheting blade — squeeze, release, squeeze again, and the blade advances through the wall.

The reason plumbers use one rather than a hacksaw is the joint, not the speed. A solvent-welded plastic joint depends on the pipe end being square and clean. A hacksaw leaves the cut slightly off-square and covered in swarf and burr, and any of that trapped in the socket becomes a leak path or an obstruction. A pipe cutter shears through in one clean plane, so the pipe seats fully into the fitting with solvent cement contacting the whole surface.

It is also far quicker and produces no dust, which matters when you are working in a finished kitchen or bathroom rather than on a bench.

1) Why not just use a hacksaw?

Because of the joint. A solvent-welded joint needs a square, clean pipe end. A hacksaw cuts slightly off-square and leaves swarf and burr, which gets trapped in the socket and becomes a leak path. A cutter shears in one clean plane.

2) What size pipe will it take?

Up to 42 mm outside diameter. Measure the actual OD rather than going by the nominal size — plumbing sizes are named by bore, and the cutter is limited by the outside.

3) Can I cut copper or GI pipe with it?

No. It is for plastic pipe only — PVC, CPVC, PPR, PEX and similar. Metal will damage the blade permanently. Copper needs a proper tube cutter.

4) How does the ratchet work?

Squeeze and release repeatedly. Each squeeze advances the blade further through the wall, so you cut larger pipe without needing one very strong grip. Several light squeezes give a cleaner cut than forcing it.

5) The cut is crushing rather than shearing — why?

A dull blade, almost always. A blunt blade deforms the pipe instead of cutting it, which ruins the square end you bought the tool for. Replace or sharpen it.
