1) What is the difference between glossy enamel and satin enamel?
Glossy enamel has a high-gloss, mirror-like shine that is very reflective and shows imperfections. Satin enamel has a soft sheen and a more refined look that is less reflective and hides minor imperfections. Choose glossy for a dramatic shine, satin for subtle elegance.
2) Do I need primer before applying enamel paint?
Yes, always. Use wood primer on wood and metal primer on metal. Primer improves adhesion, prevents staining, reduces paint consumption and gives an even colour and finish.
3) How long does enamel take to dry, and when can I recoat?
It is touch dry in about 3 hours, but oil-based enamel dries in two stages — solvent evaporation, then oxygen cross-linking — so the recoat window is strictly 16 to 18 hours between coats. Recoating at 6–8 hours traps uncured solvents and causes wrinkling, blistering and an uneven gloss. Allow 24–48 hours to cure before heavy use, longer in humid conditions.
4) How much thinner should I add?
Thin with Mineral Turpentine Oil (MTO): 8–10% by volume (80–100 ml per litre of paint) for brush or roller, and 15–20% (150–200 ml per litre) for spray. Over-thinning reduces gloss, so measure rather than estimate.
5) Can I use enamel paint on walls?
Not recommended. Enamel is designed for wood and metal. For walls, use emulsion paints, which are easier to apply, faster drying and more breathable. Enamel on walls is hard to apply evenly and shows brush marks.
6) Can I apply enamel over old enamel paint?
Yes, if the old paint is in good condition. Lightly sand it to give the new coat something to grip, clean thoroughly, then apply the new enamel. If the old paint is flaking or peeling, remove it completely, prime, then apply the new enamel.
