  • Product: Plastic bandli — also called a tasla, ghamela or tagari
  • Use: Carrying and mixing cement, mortar and sand, plus general household and site use

  • Material: Plastic
  • Diameter: 13 - 15 inches
  • Not food grade

Plastic Bandli — the tasla or ghamela in plastic rather than steel — is the round pan used for carrying and mixing cement, mortar and sand, and for a great deal else besides.

Two properties make the plastic version worth choosing. The first is obvious: it is much lighter, and over a day of carrying loaded pans that difference is felt in the shoulders rather than measured on a scale. The second is less obvious but matters more to anyone who mixes mortar: the body flexes. When cement sets in a steel pan it has to be chipped off; flex a plastic pan and the set material cracks away in sheets. That alone saves a few minutes at the end of every session, and it keeps the pan usable instead of gradually filling with hardened residue.

Because it cannot rust, it also works far beyond the building site — washing, animal feed, gardening, storage and general carrying — where a steel pan left wet would be stained and corroding within weeks.

The trade-off is honest and worth knowing: plastic does not take abrasion, sharp rubble or heat the way steel does, and plastic left permanently in the sun eventually goes brittle. For mixing, carrying and general use it is the better tool. For demolition rubble and hard site abuse, steel still wins.

Plastic or Iron?

  Plastic Bandli Iron Tasla
Weight Light — less fatigue over a day Heavier
Rust None — can stay wet Will rust where paint wears
Cleaning set mortar Flex the pan and it cracks off Has to be chipped off
Rubble & abrasion Can crack or scar Takes it far better
Long sun exposure Goes brittle over time Unaffected
Best for Mixing, carrying, household and general use Rubble, demolition, heavy site work

Most sites keep both. Plastic for mortar and carrying, steel for breaking out and clearing debris.

Applications

Where it is used

  • Cement and mortar: Mixing small batches and carrying to the work face

  • Plastering and masonry: Holding a working quantity beside the mason
  • Household and utility: Washing, soaking, storage and general carrying
  • Farm and garden: Animal feed, compost, potting mix and harvest carrying

1) Should I buy plastic or iron?

Depends on the job. Plastic is lighter, will not rust, and set mortar cracks straight off when you flex it — which makes it the better choice for mixing, carrying and general use. Iron takes abrasion, sharp rubble and rough handling far better, so it is the one for demolition and debris. Most sites keep both.

2) How do I get set cement out of it?

Let it dry fully, then flex the pan — press the sides inward and the hardened material cracks away in sheets. That is the main practical advantage over steel, where set cement has to be chipped off and the pan gradually collects residue.

3) Will it last outdoors?

It will not rust, so wet storage is no problem at all. But plastic left permanently in direct sun eventually goes brittle and starts cracking at the rim. Storing it in shade between jobs adds years to it. For a pan that lives outdoors in the sun year-round, steel is the more durable choice.
