Aluminium Concrete Screed Bar is the straightedge pulled across freshly poured concrete to strike it off level — and the same tool used on walls to level plaster between guide strips.

It does two jobs in one pass, and the second is the one people overlook. The obvious job is striking off: cutting away the excess concrete so the surface sits exactly at the height of the forms or guide rails. The less obvious job is consolidation — as the bar moves across the pour it pushes the large aggregate down and draws the fine cement paste to the surface. That layer of cream is what you later float and trowel to a finish. Without it you are trying to finish a surface of exposed stone.

Aluminium is the material of choice because a screed bar needs two things that usually conflict: it has to be rigid enough to hold a true line across the whole span, and light enough to drag repeatedly through stiff wet concrete without exhausting two people. Steel is rigid but heavy; aluminium gives most of the stiffness at a fraction of the weight.

Everything about a screed bar comes down to one property: straightness. The tool has no moving parts and no mechanism — it holds a true edge, or it does not. A bar with a bend in it transfers that bend into every slab and every wall it touches, and in concrete the result is permanent.

1) What length do I need?

It must be longer than the pour is wide, with comfortable overhang at each end — the bar works by riding on the forms or guide rails at both ends while you pull it across. Measure the widest span you will screed and add a margin. Bear in mind that a very long bar flexes more in the middle, so match the length to the job rather than buying the longest available.

2) What does screeding actually do to the concrete?

Two things at once. It strikes off the excess so the surface sits exactly at form height, and it consolidates the mix — pushing the large aggregate down and drawing the fine cement paste to the top. That paste is what you float and trowel afterwards. Skip proper screeding and you are trying to finish a surface of exposed stone.

3) Is this a vibrating screed?

No. This is a manual straightedge, pulled by hand. Powered vibrating screeds are a different tool with a motor unit attached to the beam, used on large commercial pours. For slabs, screeds, paths and plastering, a manual bar is what the work calls for.

4) Can I use it for wall plastering too?

Yes, and many masons buy it for exactly that. The principle is identical — the bar is pulled across plaster between guide strips in the same way it is pulled across concrete between forms. One tool covers floors and walls.

5) My screed bar has developed a bend. Can it be straightened?

Not reliably, and this is worth taking seriously because straightness is the only property this tool has. A bent bar puts its bend into every slab and wall it touches, permanently. Most bars are bent in storage rather than in use — left leaning in a corner under their own weight, or with material stacked on top. Store it flat or hanging and it will stay true for years.
