Makita M8700B 710W Rotary Hammer is a 2-mode SDS-PLUS hammer delivering 1.9 J of impact energy, rated for 22 mm holes in concrete and up to 54 mm with a core bit. A rotary hammer works fundamentally differently from a percussion drill: a piston drives the bit forward with genuine force on every blow, which is why it keeps cutting through reinforced concrete where a hammer drill stalls and cooks its motor.

The torque limiter is the feature that matters most for operator safety. If the bit jams — which happens the moment you hit rebar — the clutch releases and stops rotation rather than transmitting the full twisting force of a 710 W motor into your wrists. On a tool this powerful, that is the difference between an interrupted hole and an injury.

Two modes cover rotation only for wood and metal, and hammering with rotation for concrete. 1) Why choose this over the M0801B hammer drill?

The M8700B is a true rotary hammer with a piston mechanism delivering 1.9 J per blow and an SDS-PLUS chuck. It drills 22 mm concrete against the M0801B's 16 mm, keeps cutting through rebar-laden concrete, and won't burn out under daily anchor drilling. If concrete is occasional, the M0801B is enough; if it's your job, buy this one.

2) What is a torque limiter and why does it matter?

If the bit jams — typically on hitting rebar — the clutch releases and stops rotation instead of twisting the tool out of your hands. On a 710 W hammer that's a genuine injury-prevention feature, and it protects the motor and gearbox too.

3) What bits does it take?

SDS-PLUS shank bits only. The grooved shank locks into the chuck so impact energy transfers into the bit rather than hammering the chuck apart. Round-shank bits need an optional adapter and must only be used in rotation-only mode.

4) Can I use it for chiselling and light demolition?

This is a 2-mode tool — rotation only, or hammering with rotation. It does not have a chisel-only mode. For chipping tile or breaking out plaster, you need a 3-mode rotary hammer or a dedicated demolition hammer.
