Asian Paints WoodTech Touchwood 1K PU is a single-component, polyurethane-modified clear coating engineered to protect both interior and exterior timber. Unlike multi-pack finishes, this 1K formulation removes the hassle of mixing a separate hardener, making brush application straightforward.
A standout feature is its self-sealing property. The same liquid can be used as both the binding undercoat and the durable decorative topcoat, removing the need to buy a separate sanding sealer. It leaves a tough protective film that outperforms traditional French polish finishes, and is formulated to flow smoothly with a brush while naturally levelling out brush marks.
Key Features
- Dual Surface Compatibility: Suited to both exterior weather exposure and interior woodwork
- Self-Sealing Architecture: Cuts down material costs and working time by eliminating a standalone undercoat step
- Enhanced Film Hardness: Forms a durable, scratch-resistant barrier that protects against everyday wear
- High-Clarity Gloss Retention: Brings out the natural wood grain while resisting fading over time

1) What makes Touchwood 1K PU different from high-end 2K PU wood finishes?
Touchwood is a 1K (single-pack) system, meaning it comes pre-formulated in a single can and dries naturally without needing an external chemical hardener. High-end 2K PU systems use a separate base and hardener that must be combined accurately right before use. While 2K systems can provide a harder finish, Touchwood 1K PU is favored for its simpler preparation, lower cost, and easier brush application.
2) Does this product require a separate wood primer or sanding sealer coat before application?
No. WoodTech Touchwood 1K PU is self-sealing. For a standard application, you can dilute the first layer slightly more with Mineral Turpentine Oil (MTO) so it functions as a pore-sealing basecoat directly on raw wood. Once dry and lightly sanded, subsequent lightly thinned or undiluted layers act as the final decorative topcoat.
3) Can this clear coating be applied over wood previously treated with a stain or pigment powder?
Generally, yes — once a stain or pigment-based colouring layer (such as an alcohol-based spirit dye or an earth pigment powder like raw or burnt sienna) has dried and cured fully, a clear topcoat like Touchwood can be applied over it to lock in the colour. Let the stain layer sit for a few hours before brushing Touchwood over it to avoid pulling or smearing the pigment underneath, and test on a small area first if you haven't used that combination before.
4) How long does it take for Touchwood 1K PU to dry before I can apply the next coat?
Under normal conditions, the surface is dry to the touch in around 60 minutes and tack-free in about 4 hours. For best results, allow 6 to 8 hours — or overnight — before lightly sanding and applying the next coat. Sanding or recoating too early can cause the brush to pull the lower film, leaving wrinkling or a sticky surface.
5) Can I use standard petrol or NC thinners to dilute this product?
No — only use Mineral Turpentine Oil (MTO) to thin this formulation. Using other solvents such as NC thinner, petrol, or generic reducing thinners can break down the polyurethane resins, ruining the levelling and turning the coating into a cloudy, unusable mixture.
