Application Guidelines
- Surface Preparation: Clean the wall thoroughly, remove dust, grease and loose particles, and make sure the surface is dry
- Mix the Putty: Put 36–40% clean water (11–12 litres per 30 kg bag) in the bucket, then add the putty powder gradually while stirring mechanically. Never pour water over dry powder, as it causes micro-clumping
- Use Within 3 to 3.5 Hours: Discard any mixed putty left beyond this time
- First Coat: Apply a thin, even coat with a putty blade or trowel and let it dry for at least 3 hours
- Second Coat: Apply the second coat for a smooth finish. Keep the total thickness of both coats within 1.5 mm
- Sand: Let the finished putty dry for at least 10–12 hours (preferably overnight), then sand lightly with fine emery paper (180–220 grit) before priming

1) How much area does a 30 kg bag of Birla White WallCare Putty cover?
A 30 kg bag covers approximately 450–600 sq ft in two coats (15–20 sq ft per kg). Rough or porous walls need more putty, so measure your wall area and add 10–15% for wastage.
2) How much water do I add, and how long does the mixed putty last?
Add 36–40% clean water, which is 11–12 litres for a 30 kg bag. Pour the water in first and add the powder gradually while stirring mechanically — never pour water over dry powder. The mix stays workable for 3 to 3.5 hours at most; after that it loses strength and must be thrown out.
3) How thick can I apply it, and why does putty crack?
Keep the total thickness of the two-coat system within 1.5 mm. A thicker build creates tension in the cement matrix, which causes shrinkage cracks and later peeling of the paint. Other causes are too much water in the mix, too little drying time between coats, applying on damp surfaces, and poor surface preparation.
4) How long should I wait between coats, before sanding and before painting?
Allow at least 3 hours before the second coat. Let the finished putty dry for 10–12 hours (preferably overnight) before final sanding with fine emery paper. Wait about 24 hours after the final coat before painting, and longer in humid conditions, because damp putty causes paint adhesion problems and discolouration.
5) Do I need to apply primer after putty?
Yes, always. Primer seals the putty, improves paint adhesion, reduces paint consumption and gives an even colour. Use Birla White ActivCoat Interior Primer or Asian Paints TruCare Interior Wall Primer.
6) Can I use WallCare Putty on exterior walls?
No. It is designed for interior walls only. For exterior walls, use Birla White WallSeal Waterproof Putty, which is made for outdoor conditions.
7) Can I apply putty directly on painted walls?
Not recommended. Scrape and sand off loose or flaking paint first. If the paint is well adhered, roughen it with sandpaper so the putty grips. For best results, remove old paint completely and apply the putty on bare plaster or concrete.
