Don't cut costs on Primer during painting/repainting.
We have seen a lot of users cutting costs on the painting part by not using a primer in the painting process. This is especially the case during repainting projects.
In reality though, it is not worth it. Here's why, the Primer has 3 important jobs.
1. It acts as a binding agent.
2. It acts as a barrier stopping moisture from the porous wall surface.
3. In cases of repainting darker shades, it acts as a layer to whiten the old paint.
So, not using primer would lead to:
Moisture from the wall seeping into the putty and causing early flaking. This is a common mistake seen across multiple home or commercial projects. It is recommended to apply the primer first followed by wall putty. The reason for this being that primer ensures a smooth and clean surface to apply the wall putty. Applying the primer first also ensures that the wall putty adheres more effectively while sealing the surface to prevent moisture.
Higher consumption of Paint per Square Foot. Applying Primer before the base coat of paint ensures excellent adhesion of paint due the binding properties of the primer and achieving the desired finish in lesser number of coats.
HomeRun Recommendation:
The actual & correct way to apply paint is:
Sanding > Primer > Putty > Sanding > Primer > Paint Base Coat > Paint Top Coat
You would end up with a lesser net total spend if you follow the above process and would have great looking walls for a longer period.
